Wine & Spirits - April 2018 - 119

YEAR'S BEST TUSCAN REDS
ernet sauvignon with 15 percent petit verdot,
it feels dense and taut, with tannins like fine
sandpaper that lend grip to the wine. Decant
this an hour before serving to let its earthy
notes blow off, or better yet, give it a few
years in the cellar. § Vias Imports, NY

92 | Tenuta San Guido

$60

2015 Toscana Guidalberto ^ A blend of cabernet sauvignon and merlot, this wine shows
poise and freshness in the 2015 vintage. Cool
mineral tannins infuse the wine with energy,
guiding its flavors of plum, raspberry and
black currant as they flesh out to reveal notes
of anise, tobacco and green peppercorn. The
flavors feel precise and tightly meshed, with
plenty of freshness to merit aging, but it's
delicious now if decanted alongside seared
steak. § Kobrand, Purchase, NY
228226

92 | Tenuta Sette Ponti

$110

92 | Tolaini

$132

2015 Toscana Oreno ^ The 2015 Oreno balances pillowy purple fruit with cool mineral
tones in a wine that feels fresh and precise.
With its vibrant acidity, black-peppercorn
spice and ample tannins, it has a coiled tension that calls for a few years in the cellar. §
Kobrand, Purchase, NY
227437
2011 Toscana Picconero ^ Picconero is rich
and ripe in the warm 2011 vintage, its concentrated flavors of black plum and cassis
layered with notes of molten chocolate, licorice and black spice. The flavors evolve in a
savory and earthy direction, taking on notes
of blistered tomato and roasted mushroom
that balance the wine's ripeness. § Banville
Wine Merchants, North Bergen, NJ
227042

91 | Tenuta di Trinoro

$95

2014 Toscana Campo di Magnacosta ^ The
3.7-acre Magnacosta plot was planted in the
silt-and-gravel soils of an old riverbed, at a
lower elevation (1,476 feet) than Trinoro's
other two single-vineyard cabernet francs,
yet it feels less opulent, with ringing acidity
and notes of green peppercorn that leave it
just on the right side of ripeness. The wine
begins to flesh out with exposure to air,
taking on rounder red-cherry flavors and a
savory note of beef carpaccio, but the tannic
finish suggests this will benefit from time in
the cellar, or a pairing with fatty foods like
grilled ribeye. § T. Edward Wines, NY
227572

90 | Castiglion del Bosco

$73

2013 Toscana Prima Pietra ^ Massimo Ferragamo, proprietor of Montalcino's Castiglion del Bosco, purchased 25 acres of hillside vineyard near the Tuscan coast in 2002

and planted the merlot, petit verdot, cabernet sauvignon and franc that form the basis
for this juicy red. Plush red fruit flavors lead
into notes of blood orange, fresh sage and
cherry liqueur. Notes of clove and nutmeg
hint at the 18 months of barrique aging (30
percent new), yet the wine finishes with
freshness and verve. § Maisons Marques &
Domaines USA, Oakland, CA
228107

90 | La Massa

$25

90 | Ornellaia

$31

90 | Colle Santa Mustiola

$70

2014 Toscana Rosso (Best Buy) ^ From the
rainy 2014 vintage, this sangiovese blend
offers fleshy red-cherry flavors highlighted
by aromas of pink flowers, rosemary and
orange zest. Lightly gritty tannins lend a
pleasant rusticity, making this a fun choice
for trattoria fare. § T. Edward Wines, NY
228485
2015 Toscana Le Volte (Best Buy) ^ Flavors
of chilled plum and seedy raspberry lend a
cool, red-fruited character to this merlotbased blend. It feels juicy and vibrant, with
a hint of spice dancing through the fruit, and
well-integrated tannins that firm up the finish. § Vintus, Pleasantville, NY
227852
2008 Toscana Poggio Ai Chiari ^ Fabio Cenni's 12 acres of sangiovese vines are situated
in the hills of southern Tuscany near Lake
Chiusi. Poggio Ai Chiari, his flagship wine,
ferments for 40 days, then ages for four
years in a mix of large oak casks and barriques. The 2008 is Cenni's current release,
and offers spiced red-cherry flavors balanced
by notes of savory tomato, cured meat and
soft leather. Fine tannins weave through the
wine, lending it a fine-boned delicacy. § SD
Selection, Yonkers, NY
227481

90 | Tenuta Sette Cieli

$105

90 | Tenuta Sette Cieli

$60

2013 Toscana Scipio ^ This cabernet franc
grows in vineyards that climb 1,300 feet in
altitude, overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea. The
cool air at these heights was an advantage
in the warm 2013 summer, preserving the
acidity in the wine's ripe plum and cherry
fruit. Notes of espresso and Mexican chocolate picked up during two years in French
oak barriques (40 percent new) and the tight,
chewy tannins suggest the wine will benefit
from a few years in the cellar. § Wilson Daniels,
St. Helena, CA
227229
2013 Toscana Indaco ^ Indaco is a blend of
40 percent malbec with equal parts cabernet
sauvignon and merlot; those three varieties
thrived in 2013, a warm summer without

excessive heat stress. It's a voluptuous wine
with flavors of ripe black plum accented with
notes of tobacco and dark chocolate, a little brash now, but with lift and energy that
will allow it to improve over the next several
years. § Wilson Daniels, St. Helena, CA
227436

90 | Tolaini

$40

90 | Tenuta di Trinoro

$32

90 | Tua Rita

$65

88 | Le Ragnaie

$22

88 | Tenuta Sette Cieli

$25

2014 Toscana Valdisanti San Giovanni ^
Notes of tobacco and freshly cracked black
pepper weave through this wine, a lean and
tightly tannic red that needs time in the glass
to flesh out into flavors of black currants,
cherries and dark chocolate. A juicy burger
would match well with the wine's smoky
notes and lithe texture. § Banville Wine Merchants, North Bergen, NJ
227040
2015 Toscana Le Cupole (Best Buy) ^ Cabernet franc (58 percent of the blend) shines
through in this wine's notes of grilled game
and green peppercorn. Full bodied, with
glass-staining concentration, the wine has
juicy blackberry flavors knit together by
lively acidity and fine tannins. That combination of intensity and freshness has made it
a perennial favorite at restaurants like Boulder's Frasca. § T. Edward Wines, NY
227200
2015 Toscana Giusto di Notri ^ Robust blackfruit flavors are layered with notes of dark
chocolate, molasses and zippy spices in this
wine, aged 20 months in barriques. Scents
of lavender and sage emerge with exposure
to air, but give it some time in the cellar for
the oak influence to subside before pouring
with pasta with a rich ragù. § Leonardo Locascio
Selections/The Winebow Group, NY
228435
2015 Toscana Troncone (Best Buy) ^ This is
the second vintage of Troncone, the wine that
Riccardo Campineti formerly produced as a
Chianti Colli Senesi. The fruit comes from
the highest part of the Le Ragnaie vineyard,
and the wine ferments in concrete before
aging in large Slavonian casks. The result is
a translucent, floral-scented wine with redcherry flavors accented by notes of tea leaves
and gold cherry tomatoes. Its dusty tannic
structure suggests it needs another year in
bottle. § Vine Street Imports, Philadelphia, PA
227228
2016 Toscana Yantra (Best Buy) ^ Vinified
and aged in stainless steel, this fresh, fruity
blend of cabernet sauvignon and merlot
shows flavors of blackberry and black currant
framed by fruit-skin tannins. It has enough
