YEAR'S
CHILEAN CABERNET, CAMENERE & BORDEAUX BLENDS

2015 Maipo Valley Cabernet Sauvignon
(Best Buy) ^ An elegant cabernet from Macul,
in the Andean foothills within the city limits
of Santiago, this wine offers radiant red fruit
over firm, delicate tannins. This is Aquitania's basic cabernet, yet it manages to show
not only the style of the house, but also the
traditional character of Macul. § Vine Connections, Sausalito, CA

$50

2014 Maipo Valley Cabernet Sauvignon ^
Despite the blackness and ripeness of its
fruit, this cabernet offers enough tense acidity to give balance to the whole. It's a heavyweight red, reaching every corner of the palate with its succulent flavors-the kind of red
you need at your favorite steakhouse. § Majestic Imports, Santa Rosa, CA
121956

90 | Concha y Toro

$17

2016 Marchigüe Gran Reserva Serie Riberas Palo Santo Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon (Best Buy) ^ Marchigüe is on the
coastal side of Colchagua and, thanks to the
marine influence, it offers wines with more
nerve and sharper focus than those from the
warm center of the valley. This wine's acidity
pricks the tongue, and its red fruit refreshes
everything in its path. It feels alive and energetic, crunchy and vivacious. § Excelsior Wine
& Spirits, Old Brookville, NY

89 | Casa Silva

$20

2016 Colchagua Valley Los Lingues Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon (Best Buy) ^ Light
and refreshing, with a menthol accent on its
red fruit and a smooth polished texture, this
is easy to drink, and concentrated enough to
serve with a seared rib-eye steak. § Vine Connections, Sausalito, CA
122460

88 | Xavier Flouret

$16

2014 Maipo Valley Oscar Cabernet Sauvignon (Best Buy) ^ A ripe and concentrated
cabernet, this has some herbal touches, but,
mainly, strong tannins and black fruit. It
needs food to handle its exuberance, perhaps
lamb chops. § Cognac One, NY

95 | Concha y Toro

$40

2014 Cachapoal Valley Terrunyo Block 27
Peumo Vineyard Carmenère ^ The Peumo
Vineyard extends along the north bank of
the Cachapoal River, on the hillsides of the
Coastal Range. This carmenère is selected
from vines planted in the 1970s, with a little cabernet sauvignon and cabernet franc

added to enhance the wine's tannic structure.
Taste it and you might immediately think of
ordering duck breast for dinner. It has flavors of blue fruit as well as carmenère's typical herbal notes, while the sanguine character adds complexity. The tannins are soft yet
firm, backed by tense acidity. § Excelsior Wine
& Spirits, Old Brookville, NY
122793

94 | Santa Rita

2017 Colchagua Valley Floresta Carmenère ^ Sebastián Labbé is taking Santa Rita's
carmenère in a new direction. For this first
vintage of Floresta, he selected the fruit from
a vineyard on the slopes of Apalta, planted 70
years ago. And he harvested the fruit about
one month earlier than had been the practice in the past, looking for greater freshness.
It's there in the herbal notes and radiant red
fruit. Everything about the wine seems to
have vigor and tension while the pointed tannins support the weight of the fruit. Available through the winery only. § Delicato Family
Vineyards, Manteca, CA
121959

93 | Concha y Toro

$150

2014 Peumo Carmín de Peumo Carmenère ^
There is a density and intoxicating depth to
this wine's ripe red fruit. Carmenère tannins
are rarely aggressive, and here, they feel particularly sleek and smooth. The flavors are
long and intense, full of delicate herbal and
spicy details. Ignacio Recabarren included
small amounts of cabernet sauvignon and
cabernet franc in the blend for extra structure in the voluptuous 2014 vintage. § Excelsior Wine & Spirits, Old Brookville, NY

93 | Concha y Toro

$25

2015 Peumo Marqués de Casa Concha Carmenère ^ What, at first, seems to be a superripe, concentrated carmenère slowly reveals
itself as something different. After a few
hours in the glass, the black-cherry flavors
mix with herbal notes, gaining in freshness
and vivacity. Give this young carmenère two
or three years in the bottle. § Excelsior Wine &
Spirits, Old Brookville, NY
122792

93 | Santa Rita

2014 Colchagua Valley Pehuén Carmenère ^
Sebastián Labbé has taken Santa Rita's top
carmenère in a lighter direction, creating a
soft, smoky red that has the herbal notes and
earthy character of the variety, but accents
a juicy combination of red fruit and herbs.
This is a blend of two old-vine sites in Apalta,
one of which Labbé used for his new Floresta
Carmenère (also recommended here). Available through the winery only. § Delicato Family
Vineyards, Manteca, CA

2014 Rapel Valley Massal 1945 Carmenère ^
Gabriel Edwards's grandmother planted this
vineyard in the Almahue Valley in 1945; it's
now one of the oldest carmenère vineyards
in Chile. A massal selection of vines planted
on their own roots and farmed organically,
the vineyard gives a radiantly fresh, complex
red. There's a breezy coolness to its herbal
tobacco scents, and the red fruit feels firm,
pinned to the palate by fine-grained tannins.

2016 Peumo Gran Reserva Serie Riberas
Peumo Vineyard Carmenère (Best Buy) ^
Even in cool years, like 2016, the generous sun of Peumo manages to ripen carmenère without difficulty. This wine feels
broad, with ripe flavors of blackberries and
black cherries. The breezes that flow along
the Cachapoal River translate to freshness
in the grapes, providing a lively, tenacious
acidity that makes this wine easy to drink.
The black-cherry flavors last in a deliciously
herbal finish. § Excelsior Wine & Spirits, Old
Brookville, NY
122508
2016 Maipo Valley Limited Edition Carmenère ^ Red fruit fills this carmenère, building density into the wine's soft, velvety tannins. There's also room for the herbal side
of the variety, here shown without shyness
in vivid high notes that work with the acidity to deliver a gentle sensation of freshness. §
Massanois Imports, NY

2015 Peumo Gran Reserva Serie Riberas
Peumo Vineyard Carmenère (Best Buy) ^
Oak dominates when you first open this
bottle, but give the wine time with air and
carmenère's herbal red fruit takes over. The
texture is smooth, the acidity friendly, the flavors lasting with succulence. § Excelsior Wine
& Spirits, Old Brookville, NY
122610
2016 Colchagua Valley Natura Carmenère
(Best Buy) ^ With red fruit up front and herbal
notes in the background, this is simple and
focused on varietal character, achieving harmony between its herbal and fruity sides.
Pair it with beef tenderloin. § Banfi Vintners,
Old Brookville, NY n
