2010 Pomerol ^ Claire Laval makes this wine
from the 40-year-old vines in her family's
vineyard near the church in Pomerol. The
property is certified organic, the wine fermented without added yeasts, aged in French
oak barrels (50 percent new) and bottled
unfiltered, presenting a detailed 2010 with
the smoky finesse of a lovely Pomerol. The
scents of black fruit and purple flowers are
cool and lasting, and though the bottle is not
cheap, it's delicious enough to stand with the
village's coveted wines, at a price accessible
to more than the one percent. § Kermit Lynch
Wine Merchant, Berkeley, CA

92 | Château Ascension

$45

2015 St-Emilion Grand Cru ^ A 14-acre property on the limestone plateau east of town,
Ascension's vineyard is planted to merlot (75
percent) and cabernet franc. The wine aged
for 16 months in French oak barriques (half
of them new), that ambitious oak regime
coming across in a scent that parallels freshcrushed spices. There's tension to the flavors,
a buzz of green fig, rose petals and lush black
fruit that lasts, bright and delicious. § Serge
Doré Selections, Chappaqua, NY

92 | Château Bourgneuf

$60

2015 Pomerol ^ Frédérique Vayron makes this
wine at her family's estate in the center of
Pomerol, under their ownership since 1821.
It's a warm, west-facing slope of gravelly clay,
where merlot ripened to succulent sweetness
in 2015, firmed up by 15 percent cabernet
franc. The fruit touches on pretty notes of
raspberry and red plum, along with savory
mushroom notes in the tannins. It's the kind
of texturally rich merlot that heads directly
for the pleasure centers of the brain. § Maisons
Marques & Domaines USA, Oakland, CA
228591

91 | Ch. Godard Bellevue

$17

2015 Francs Côtes de Bordeaux (Best Buy) ^
Bernadette Arbo is the fifth generation of her

family to farm vines at this estate, and the
first to bottle wine rather than selling grapes
to the local cooperative. She and her husband, Joseph, set aside 50 acres of the estate
as Godard Bellevue, where they grow merlot
(65 percent) and cabernets franc and sauvignon in clay-limestone soils. The energy in
this wine may make your mouth come alive
with rose and cherry scents. The lean drive
of the flavors is just rich enough to feel sexy,
fresh and floral. It's well worth buying by the
case. § Fruit of the Vine, Long Island City, NY
229762

91 | Château Lafleur-Gazin $60

2015 Pomerol ^ This property lies between
Gazin and Lafleur-Pétrus on the Pomerol plateau. This is merlot, ripened to fragrant redcherry brightness, plummy and floral. Firmly
structured, the fruit feels youthful under its
rich drape of oak, with cool freshness to sustain the wine as it ages. § Maisons Marques &
Domaines USA, Oakland, CA
229389

90 | Château Castegens

$17

2015 Castillon Côtes de Bordeaux (Best
Buy) ^ Located in Castillon-la-Bataille, on
clay-limestone slopes facing south toward
the Dordogne River, this château stages
an annual reenactment of the battle that
ended the 100 Years War between England
and France. The vineyards, planted to merlot (80 percent) and cabernet franc, are five
miles east of St-Emilion. Where else would
you find a bright, spicy, red-fruited Bordeaux
with energy and drive in its tannins...for $17?
Maybe the price dates back to the 15th century...or maybe it marks the renaissance of
Castillon's grand terroir, long overlooked. §
Kysela Père et Fils, Winchester, VA
229435

90 | Château Haut-Gravet

90 | Château Lamartine

$32

2015 Castillon Côtes de Bordeaux Hommage ^ A selection of merlot aged for a year in
French oak, this is plush, the flavors simple
and smoky, enlivened by a cool, zesty buzz of
freshness. It's a graceful, floral red for steak
frites. § Château Imports, Port Washington, NY
229812

89 | Château Belles-Graves $32

2014 Lalande-de-Pomerol (Best Buy) ^ Give
this a little air and it turns from austere to
friendly, a small-scale claret with the brisk
feel of cotton and a cool wild-plum flavor.
Mostly merlot (88 percent), it will take on a
pan-seared sirloin. § Kermit Lynch Wine Merchant, Berkeley, CA

87 | Château Roquevieille

$17

86 | Château Puyanché

$14

2014 Castillon Côtes de Bordeaux Grand
Vin (Best Buy) ^ Earthy red-currant flavors
give this a cool start; then the alcohol warms
the finish with its generous spice. This lasts
on cassis and mushroom notes, a wine for
roast lamb. § Saranty Imports, Stamford, CT
228589
2015 Francs Côtes de Bordeaux (Best
Buy) ^ Focused on merlot (80 percent), this is
supple, cool and rich right up until the end,
where it leaves a slightly hollow feel. Overall,
it's a lovely red for $14. § Fruit of the Vine, Long
Island City, NY

BORDEAUX LEFT BANK

$45

2015 St-Emilion Grand Cru Grand Chemin ^ This grows in a five-acre parcel at the
base of the hillside, part of the 30-acre HautGravet vineyard. It's 70 percent merlot in this
vintage, a dense, ripe and chocolatey wine
with some earthy and floral details behind
the fruit and oak. Youthful and rich, this
needs a few years of bottle age to integrate. §
Serge Doré Selections, Chappaqua, NY
229439

90 | Ch. Lalande de Gravet $45

2015 St-Emilion Grand Cru ^ This wine carries the ripeness of the vintage in its sweet
flavors of black cherries and plums. There's
also a tart undercurrent, adding a sense of
earthy depth, like the scent of a cigar box. A
welcoming merlot (65 percent of the blend),
this is ready to decant for filet mignon. § Serge

91 | Château Le Boscq

2015 Pauillac Légende ^ This is a simple take
on Pauillac, offering the smoky richness and
bright plummy fruit of finely grown cabernet
sauvignon, within a clean structure. It feels
rich and delivers plenty of pleasure, speaking
of the village rather than a specific site. § Esprit
du Vin, Syosset, NY
228912
2015 St-Estèphe Cru Bourgeois ^ A lean,
muscular St-Estèphe from north of the town,
this wine has a pure black-currant flavor,
