Wine & Spirits - August 2019 - 73

YEAR'S BEST GREEK WINES
vors to free the spicy fruit. The wine lasts, as
hard as rock, with a maraschino-cherry flavor. Don't go near it without a steak. § Verity
Wine Partners, NY
271915

90 | Thymiopoulos

$44

2016 Naoussa Uranos Xinomavro ^ A dark,
extracted xinomavro, fermented with ambient yeasts and aged 18 months in oak barrels,
this balances its full-throttle fruit with notes
of mushrooms and black tea. A little volatile acidity adds lift, but this is a wintry red,
suited to beef stew with mushrooms. § Athenee Importers & Distributors, Hempstead, NY

PELOPONNESE
272150

93 | Parparoussis

$42

2015 Achaia Taos ^ A dry red from mavrodaphne, this is intensely spicy, notes of bay
leaf, rosemary, oregano and sea salt conjuring up Mediterranean hillsides. Bone dry,
with dark, gamey fruit, it feels lean and brisk,
a sophisticated red to pair with game birds. §
Cava Spiliadis, NY
271580

93 | Domaine Skouras

$30

2015 Peloponnese Megas Oenos ^ This is
George Skouras's flagship cuvée, a blend
of his best agiorgitiko, which he structures
with 20 percent cabernet sauvignon. Open it
now if you like fresh New World wines, as this
has plenty of oak-driven richness and dense,
sweet fruit. But if you leave it in the cellar for
another decade, you'll get to enjoy more of
the notes that are hiding underneath right
now-the licorice, spice and earthy leather
scents that give it brawn and savor, and the
cool foresty notes that speak of the Peloponnese. § Diamond Importers, Chicago, IL
271823

90 | Gaia

$51

2016 Nemea Estate Agiorgitiko ^ Yiannis
Paraskevopoulos grows this wine in the cool
heights of Nemea, where the grapes ripen
more slowly than on the flats of the appellation. His 2016 captures that coolness in its
herbal notes and gripping tannins, a berryfilled agiorgitiko in search of a well-marbled
steak. § Craft + Estate/Winebow Imports, NY
271352

90 | Palivou Estate

$24

2016 Nemea Estate Single Vineyard Selection ^ This is evocative of the lush, warm landscape of Nemea in the sweetness of its cherry
fruit and the spicy, resinous scents of Mediterranean brush. § R&R Selections, Frisco, TX
271575

90 | Domaine Skouras

$30

2014 Peloponnese Synoro ^ Skouras plays to
his Francophile leanings in this blend, look-

ing to cabernet franc and merlot for the base
of this wine, and adding 20 percent agiorgitiko. Oak has a primary role in its flavor and
structure, but the vibrant red-berry fruit wins
out in the end, lifted by scents of tobacco and
green peppers. Pour it as you might a modern-style Chinon, with steak frites. § Diamond
Importers, Chicago, IL
271753

88 | Zachariàs

$14

87 | Greek Wine Cellars

$13

2016 Nemea (Best Buy) ^ This is velvety and
full-flavored, with enough savory spice and
herbal scents to balance its sweet cherry flavors. § Stellar Importing, Whitestone, NY
271234
2016 Nemea Kouros Agiorgitiko (Best
Buy) ^ This balances its sweet cherries-insyrup flavors with slightly drying, herbaceous tannins. It's a rustic balance but it
works, especially with a meaty moussaka. §

97 | Estate Argyros

$63/500ml

2011 Vinsanto 4 Years Barrel Aged (Best
Buy) ^ Yiannis Argyros was the king of Vinsanto before his death in 2012; he carried on
a tradition that predates that of Tuscany's
sweet wines. His son, Matthew, now continues the tradition, seeing the wines through
long barrel aging to take on their characteristic complexity. Although this is one of
the estate's younger wines, it's spectacular.
A blend of assyrtiko with aidani and athiri,
late-harvested and sun-dried on a pumice
plateau, this aged in oak barrels for four
years. It stuns with its power, the acidity and
sugar delivering honeyed flavors with spinetingling intensity. It tastes of butter toffee
and orange zest, vanilla and lemon, with
herbal notes that accent its briskness and
clarity. Masterful. § Craft + Estate/Winebow

272189

96 | Estate Argyros

$172/500ml

1994 Vinsanto 20 Years Barrel Aged ^ Even
after extensive time in barrel, this is vibrant
and youthful, its nutty caramel scents lifted
by the smoky, peaty notes of wood and time.
As it opens in the glass it actually gets fruitier, a strawberry ripeness filling in the center,
creating a sense of time running backwards. §

272190

93 | Estate Argyros

$172/500ml

1993 Vinsanto 20 Years Barrel Aged ^
Mahogany-hued, this tastes like a honeydrenched walnut cake, the bitter, warming
notes of cinnamon and cardamom play-

ing off its deep, plush sweetness. There's
an undertow of mushroom-broth flavor, an
umami richness that gives the wine a sense
of depth and expansiveness. § Craft + Estate/

272191

92 | Estate Argyros

$172/500ml

1995 Vinsanto 20 Years Barrel Aged ^ This
is a heady vintage, with deep, dark notes of
roasted plum and walnuts bathed in maple
syrup. Herbal notes come up with time in the
glass, rays of freshness that give this lift and
length. § Craft + Estate/Winebow Imports, NY
272215

91 | Domaine
Papagiannakos

$40/500ml

2014 Attica Melias ^ Melias means honey-
an apt descriptor for this viscous electricgold wine. Vassilis Papagiannakos makes it
according to an old tradition that involves
boiling a portion of the grape must to concentrate it, then adding successive doses of
fresh juice to that dense base. The result is
smoky and dense with apricot and goldenraisin flavors, the acidity nearly imperceptible save for the fact that the wine isn't cloying. It would be a terrific match for sticky
rice with mango. § Craft + Estate/Winebow

272192

90 | Estate Argyros

$100/500ml

2002 Vinsanto 12 Years Barrel Aged ^
Among the many Argyros Vinsantos recommended here, this one is the darkest in flavor, with roasted carob notes, caramel sweetness and a rye-Bourbon spice. A little volatile
acidity relieves the weight, and highlights the
salted-nut flavors at its core. § Craft + Estate/

271591

90 | Santo Winery

$35

87 | Achaia Cellars

$15

86 | Greek Wine Cellars

$14

2012 Vinsanto ^ This is lush and ripe, the flavors veering into the realm of red fruits, even
though it's made entirely from white grapes.
It tastes like purple figs drenched in honey,
some cinnamon spice infused into the sweetness. Plump and hedonistic, it needs nothing but a light chill. § Diamond Importers, Chicago, IL
271747
Patras Nama (Best Buy) ^ Made from mavrodaphne, this is dense with figgy flavor, notes
of black tea and clove adding savory spice. §
Stellar Importing, Whitestone, NY
271172
Samos Kourtaki Sweet White Muscat (Best
Buy) ^ A sweet, lemony confection, this makes
an easy dessert, chilled well and served with a
simple semolina cake. § Nestor Imports, NY n
