2016 Uco Valley Reserva Malbec ^ Jose
"Pepe" Galante launched this winery in 2011,
after 34 years of making wine at Catena. His
focus is the high altitudes of the Uco Valley,
where the cool temperatures allow malbec to
ripen slowly. The effect, in this wine, is a malbec that has plenty of acidity to lift its juicy,
fleshy purple fruit; it also has notes of violets
and herbs that accent its freshness. It's full

2018 Patagonia Malbec (Best Buy) ^ A label
from Bodegas Malma, Cholila Ranch takes
its name from the cabin in Argentina where
Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid holed
up in 1901. Today, Malma farms 314 acres of
vines in San Patricio del Chañar; this wine,
from estate-grown fruit, captures the area's
cool climate in its lavender scents and herbal
spice. It feels fresh and bright, carrying its
concentrated fruit with elegance and ease.

Single Vineyard Angus Brae Shiraz ^ Shiraz in red and purple, this wine is tight, with
thyme-flower and green-herb freshness,
even as the alcohol powers a blast of fruit.
It's clean and spicy, suited to equally spicy
grilled octopus or a star anise-dusted steak.

2018 Margaret River Chardonnay ^ Michael
Kerrigan grows and makes this chardonnay
at an estate originally planted in the 1970s
in Wilyabrup, less than three miles east of
the coast. It starts off with creamy flavors of
Golden Delicious apple and buttery piecrust,
all sustained by tart acidity. Then, as the flavors begin to meld, they turn toward chamomile and caraway, pork broth and caramel.
It's an intriguing take on chardonnay from
Margaret River, a wine to decant for seared

to the Indian Ocean, can take on plush, silken
generosity while still maintaining its freshness, which is the best aspect of this wine. Its
blackberry flavors and rose scents show a little heat and some waxiness in the texture, but

Shiraz Mourvedre (Best Buy) ^ Michele
Gerber is now the managing director of
her family's estate, with 355 acres of vines
in Barossa, including some of the region's
oldest plantings. Head winemaker Neville
Rowe focuses the Grand Barossa wines on
vineyards throughout Barossa. This blend is
strawberry-bright and rosy, touched by a little scallion-like reduction when first poured,
but gains depth with air-from strawberry
seed to raspberry, lasting with a pink-peppercorn spice. Decant it for grilled eggplant

makes this wine from the Quebrada Seca
Vineyard, 14 miles from the Pacific, its clay

his wine has the pale, boney brightness of
chardonnay grown in limestone, along with
juicy apple and pear flavors and a tight limelike acidity lifting the finish. Pour it with
