Mobile Video & What This Means
for 5G in APAC, China & India
With investments in connectivity broadening across Asia-Pacific, the rise in OTT apps,
SVOD services and overall shift towards online video is disrupting
traditional pay-TV and consumer viewing habits...

I

ndia is a perfect example of this rapid shift
to mobile viewing. The Economist recently
reported that the 300 million smartphones on
which Indians watch video today outnumbers
India's 200 million TV-owning households.
However, as the demand for bandwidth
increases globally, capacity has fallen behind.
This is most apparent in large urban areas
and megacities where latency at peak times
is becoming more common. According to
Ericsson ConsumerLab's latest report (5G
Consumer Potential), 5G will bring consumers
faster mobile broadband speeds, especially in
such areas. However, higher Internet speed
alone won't be enough - consumers want
additional experiences or services.
Consider also the emerging popularity
of live Internet video, which is expected to
reach 13% of Internet video traffic by 2021,
according to Telecom Asia. 5G will ultimately
be the enabler of new content.

How consumers receive or want to receive
their favorite content will inevitably change.
All eyes will be on Tokyo 2020 next year, with
5G playing an integral role in how the footage
from the games is distributed and delivered.
The opportunities for vendors, content
creators and operators to develop not-tobe-missed immersive media experiences,
regardless of network and device, is
limitless. 5G technology can help enable new
immersive online games and 360-degree
video streaming of live events, while further
supporting HDR, 8K video transmission and
