A significant milestone was achieved with the launch of NHK's first 8K Super Hi-Vision

T

he channel televised in frame rates of
59.94, 60 and 120P as well as delivering
audio in 22.2 multi-channel. With this success,
the Japanese broadcaster is working towards
broader deployment of live 8K broadcast during
the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics,
targeting public giant screens and consumer
8K TV sets.
The move towards 8K looks promising.
In particular, 8K acquisition at prestigious
events and selected cinematic instances
can be extremely useful. In the context of
oversampling, where camera crew record
footage at a higher resolution than required,
content creatives are given the flexibility
of having a larger canvas of pixels to work
with alongside wider creative options in
post-production.

Solutions Marketing, foresees that the
deployment of 8K acquisition tools in the
coming years would primarily be in mixed
resolution production environments alongside
HD and/or 4K cameras. "For customers who
intend to make forays in 8K, Sony's UHC8300 camera system ensures compatibility
with current Sony live production system
components, realizing fresh value from the
current 4K/HD investments - today and
tomorrow."
Designed to cover all the features necessary
for premium productions including live
broadcasts, entertainment and factual highend documentaries, the camera captures
pristine 8K images (7680x4320) at 120P.
Delivering well balanced high-resolution
footage with an impressive deep depth of
field, the camera is capable of supporting

BT.2020 wide color space, allowing
content creators to realize 8K images with
unprecedented clarity, color and realism.
Takuma highlighted that the UHC-8300
camera system can generate 8K, 4K and
HD signals simultaneously. "Applying
different color spaces and OETF to each
signal, the camera equips broadcasters the
ability to capture and deliver content with
the resolution and range that is right for
each production. Further, broadcasters can
enjoy the benefit of Sony's SR Live for HDR simultaneous output of HDR in 8K and 4K
alongside HD SDR signal."

infrastructure. The processed content can
then be delivered via a CDN service - and/or
via a self-built CDN.
OTT service myTV SUPER in Hong Kong
set out to offer a rich set of time-shift TV
functionality, including catch-up, pause-live
and start-over. Important requirements were
a higher picture quality, including 4K, and
support for live subtitling across a wide range
of screen sizes and devices.
Rather than using a public CDN service,
myTV SUPER decided that the best way to
meet its objectives was to build its own TV
CDN and control the delivery of its new OTT
services.
Built using Edgeware TV servers,
controlled by the TV Director request
routing software, myTV SUPER had
a CDN with a total streaming capacity
of more than 1Tbps. They deployed
Edgeware's TV Repackager integrated
with Cavena OCR subtitling.
The OTT service attained over five
million users in less than two years. It
introduced 4K on its live channels and
VOD content, provided an innovative
range of new personalized advertising
options with frame accurate precision
and created a highly scalable system
that delivers 50 linear channels.
