Elevate Broadcast Raises to New Levels
with REMI Productions
There	is	so	much	discussion	on	Remote	Production	(REMI)	today	
in the marketplace...

T

here are clear benefits for producers to
reduce the number of people and the
amount of equipment traveling to events.
REMI, or at-home production, can bring many
efficiencies including a centralized control
room. Operational manpower can be reduced
while producing more events as operators
are not traveling from site to site. Reduction
in staff travel helps facilitate multiple event
coverage by the same team in the same day.
There is an advantage in maintenance costs
as well with vehicle and production
equipment maintenance reduced
as they do not travel, incurring less
wear and tear. Total investment can be
controlled as capture devices (cameras
and mics) are the core facilities which
need to travel, and the control systems are
fixed.
What often is not discussed with REMI
production is the technologies required to
reliably send the camera and microphone
signals from the remote sites back to the

production center. There are examples of
very large operators deploying systems with
uncompressed signals 2110 IP (via private
fiber or leased line IP) to the centralized
facility. This technique works, however
budgets must be large enough to justify large
operating expense.
For cost-effective REMI production, there
are two general categories of technology:
first is contribution over 4G networks and
upcoming 5G with manufacturers like LiveU.

Cobalt Digital's 9992-ENC
base model supports both
MPEG-2 and H.264

Second, technology is compressed by IP
contribution encoders from companies like
Cobalt Digital which reliably deliver signal
over public Internet networks.
4G networks with LiveU have the unique
benefit that fixed services (Internet
connection) are not required at the site. LiveU
units are fully portable and multiple units
can be combined to allow for multi-camera
remote production. LiveU is two-way for both
video and audio, allowing great flexibility while
keeping transmission costs low. Today, LiveU
has moved out of news contribution alone to
sports and entertainment with the advances
in HEVC codecs and 4K support. Quality
is assured and operational flexibility is
superb.
In the case of fixed facilities which are
used often, use of public Internet with
hardware encoders including Cobalt Digital's
new 9992 platform, allows for HEVC
transmission. The 9992 directs control
of latency reliably with RIST protocol.

LiveU's LU600 HEVC

RIST allows for user-defined network settings
adjusting to Internet conditions. The 9992 can
send a greater number of audio channels and
use multiple protocols for maximum flexibility.
The 9992 can reduce operational costs by
using standard Internet and work through
various firewalls giving security and flexibility
for semi-fixed or fixed facilities with low OPEX
costs.
