Unlocking OTT's Potential with Satellite
Amid a booming OTT industry in Asia, the requirement for high quality content
and for reliable service delivery is higher than ever...

atellite has an increasing role to play in the
delivery of OTT services. In India alone,
according to Boston Consulting Group's
report, Entertainment Goes Online, 48% of
India's Internet users are from rural areas,
with increasing mobile penetration meaning
that many consumers will be 'OTT first.'
The development of regional content is also
creating a large opportunity.
When it comes to offering content across
multiple devices broadcasters face a
number of challenges, including how to
keep costs under control. Growing traffic is
a fundamental challenge when broadcasting

popular content - especially live - to a wide
audience. Bandwidth needs to be used
efficiently and traffic needs to be minimized.
To address these challenges, service
providers can adopt a Content Distribution
Network (CDN). This significantly reduces
traffic on the distribution backbone by
storing multiple copies of content as close
as possible to the consumer. At the same
time, start latency and content buffering is
minimized.
Converting unicast transmission to
multicast transmission avoids sending
multiple copies of the same content across
the network, saving
bandwidth.
Whether
the receiving device is
a professional receiver,
for reception at cellular
towers (3G/4G/5G) or
ATSC 3.0 towers, or
Customer
Premises
Equipment (CPE) used
in the home or at a
business, they can both
be equipped to receive

multicast traffic and host a CDN.
Satellite can ensure successful content
distribution and offers broadcasters a
number of benefits including: efficient
content delivery over vast geographical
areas; cost-effective scaling to a growing
population of receivers; the ability to deal
with increasing resolutions and bitrates
of content; scalability to address more
content; availability at remote sites when
no other communication path is possible
and the possibility of offloading congested
terrestrial backbones.
Whether used to deliver high quality
content to Direct-to-Home (DTH) CPE, to
offload congested terrestrial backbones for
live content or to feed the CDNs with popular
content, satellite is the ideal tool for the
successful roll-out of OTT services.
For distribution of content, a VSAT platform
such as the Newtec Dialog® platform, has
an important role to play. While the forward
pipe will be used to efficiently transport
live content and feed the edge CDN storage
servers with popular content, the return
channel can be used to feed back CDN

Analytics and make Cloud-based DRM
possible in cases where no other terrestrial
return channel exists.
With the success of such a solution already
proven, Asia's OTT market has a promising
future - for both service providers and their

ARRI Spotlights SRH-3 Stabilized

ARRI is showing its latest products at the show, including the SRH-3 (Stabilized Remote Head)
and the new DRW-1 (Digital Remote Wheels) controller...

he Stabilized Remote Head SRH-3
offers top quality and performance.
It is a three-axis fully stabilized remote
head allowing for cameras to go where no
person can, with increased flexibility and
ease. Whether it be on set, in a studio, or
at an event, this compact but high-quality
stabilized remote head offers solutions
that were simply not previously possible at
such levels of precision.
To provide outstanding stabilization, the
motors inside the ARRI Stabilized Remote
Head SRH-3 can compensate for external
centrifugal force by adding extra motor power.
The SRH-3 can also be remote controlled with
its newly designed, joystick based ARRI SRH3 control board with optional wheels.
The ARRI SRH-3 is extremely compact and
light, weighing in at 9kg (19.8lbs.). However,
it is able to handle payloads of up to 30kg
(66lbs.) - in excess of three times its own
weight.

ARRI Stabilized Remote Head SRH-3

The ARRI Stabilized Remote Head SRH-3 is
perfectly compatible with other ARRI products
and workflows, but can also be used with a
variety of non-ARRI brands.
The new Digital Remote Wheels DRW1 is an additional controller for use with
its Stabilized Remote Head SRH-3. The
DRW-1 combines state-of-the-art digital
technology with components inspired by
earlier generations of the ARRIHEAD. The
heavy, hand polished, precision-engineered
crank wheels are the same as were used on

the mechanical ARRIHEAD.
Bringing
a
mechanical
touch and feel to a digital
workflow, they provide operators
with maximum control by producing
a smooth, linear information stream,
and enabling operators to trust their
muscle memory.
Mechanical friction can be added in
order to make the controls less prone to
unintended movement, but more responsive
to the individual. The brake lever also pays
homage to its counterpart on the ARRIHEAD,
mimicking the operation of its mechanical
forebear and allowing for optimal, intuitive
control.
The DRW-1's assignable controls and
interchangeable components make it readily
adaptable to the working style and habits
of the operator. The angle of the wheels
is adjustable to allow for use even in tight
or constrained places. An additional third

wheel can be quickly added to the system.
Screw holes of different sizes allow for easy
attachment of a wide range of accessories.
The DRW-1 can also be mounted on any
tripod or stand.
The DRW-1, in conjunction with the SRH3, represents a supremely controllable,
adaptable, and cost-efficient remote-head
system.
