ALEXA Mini LF Expands ARRI's
Large-Format Camera System
ARRI's newly announced ALEXA Mini LF camera continues its journey around the world and BroadcastAsia
will be the next important event to meet Asian customers...

ombining the compact size and low weight
of the ALEXA Mini with the large-format
ALEXA LF sensor, it provides the best overall
image quality for large-format shooting, and
features three internal motorized FSND filters,
12 V power input, extra power outputs, a new
Codex Compact Drive, and a new MVF-2 highcontrast HD viewfinder.
ARRI's large-format camera system
launched in 2018 and is based around a
4.5K version of the ALEXA sensor, which is
twice the size and offers twice the resolution
of ALEXA cameras in 35 format, with
improvements on the ALEXA sensor's natural
colorimetry, pleasing skin tones, low noise,
and suitability for HDR and WCG workflows.
ALEXA Mini LF now joins the existing system
elements: the high-speed ALEXA LF camera,
ARRI Signature Prime lenses, LPL lens
mount, PL-to-LPL adapter, and Lens Data
System LDS-2.

ALEXA Mini LF allows internal recording
of MXF/ARRIRAW or MXF/Apple ProRes in
a variety of formats and aspect ratios, and
features the new Compact Drive recording
media from Codex, an ARRI technology
partner. The 1 TB drive offers a reliable,
affordable recording solution. With it comes
a USB-C Compact Drive Reader that can be
used without any extra software or licenses
on Mac or Windows computers. In
addition, a Compact Drive Adapter can
be used in any dock that accepts SXR
Capture Drives, potentially more than
doubling download speeds.
Another development from Codex
now makes large-format shooting a
more practical and budget-friendly
option: Codex High Density Encoding
(HDE) uses sophisticated, lossless encoding
to reduce ARRIRAW file sizes by around 40
percent during downloading or later in the

workflow. HDE is free-of-charge for use with
Codex Capture or Compact Drives, openly
shared, and fast: ARRIRAW Open Gate 4.5K
can be encoded at 24 fps on a modern
MacBook Pro.

ARRI ALEXA Mini LF Camera

At the heart of ARRI's new MVF-2
viewfinder for the ALEXA Mini LF are the
same high-contrast HD OLED display, color
science, and ARRICAM eyepiece as in ALEXA
LF's EVF-2 viewfinder, allowing optimal
judgement of focus, dynamic range, and
color on set. In addition, the MVF-2 features a
large, 4" flip-out monitor that can display the
image or the camera control menu, providing
maximum flexibility for different camera
configurations. The MVF-2 can be
used on either side of the camera
and connects via a new, flexible,
and reliable CoaXPress VF cable
that has a reach of up to 10 m for
remote camera operations. It features
a refined user interface, a built-in
eyepiece lens heater for de-fogging, and
a built-in headphones connector.

automatically managing complex DMX
settings and by featuring control interfaces
with stunning graphic design.
It is the perfect app to quickly and easily
control ARRI lights while on set. Whether
a large film with many scenes and setups
or a small project with just a few fixtures,
Stellar is built to work in all scenarios. Coded
intelligence and advanced communication
make connecting ARRI SkyPanel and L-Series
fixtures to the app simple and straightforward.
Stellar has been imagined from the
beginning to have beautiful graphic interfaces
that are tailored to the different ways of
selecting color. Exploring colors in a native
and intuitive design for a particular color
mode will make you never want to go back
to faders. Complex color modes like x, y
coordinates become more accessible and
open up this tool for everyone. With a long list

of feature additions already planned, Stellar
will grow into a fully featured lighting control
platform. Stellar is the "go-to" application
for controlling ARRI fixtures as it seamlessly
integrates functionality with great design
making the task of adjusting lights effortless.
There are seven different
ways to select color and
lighting effects with the
SkyPanel. With Stellar, it is
possible to instantly switch
between control modes so that
a color can be chosen with an
interface best suited for that
mode.
There is no need to worry
about DMX footprints or
addresses as Stellar's backend
takes care of this. Simply pick
the color mode desired and
adjust the output accordingly.

Stellar's auto layout feature makes DMX
patching a thing of the past. The app will
automatically set the DMX start addresses
for all fixtures and continue to manage the
network in order to avoid any overlapping
devices. And because today's networks

ARRI Stellar is available for phones and tablets

are a complicated mix of nodes, splitters,
gateways, and much more, Stellar will
navigate the DMX network for you. With the
automatic discovery of fixtures, Stellar will
search your DMX/RDM network and find
every ARRI fixture connected to it. Simply
assign the found devices to a project and
start lighting. Whether it's 10 fixtures,100
fixtures, or more, Stellar can handle it.
Stellar takes full advantage of the
DMX and RDM technology present
in the L-Series and SkyPanel,
making it possible to take
control of all aspects of lighting,
while hiding the complexity in
the background. The app also
allows users to import a lighting
plot image, save and share
favorite colors and effects, store
lighting looks, or even set gels
and sources on all L-Series
fixtures.
