ith the occurrence of major sporting
events globally, the broadcast industry
is witnessing the unrelenting march toward
4K HDR as the live production benchmark. As
such, a high-performance solution that helps
camera crews deliver bigger creative returns
at minimal operation costs is key.

in today's live production environment,
Sony introduces its flagship HDC-5500
multi-format live camera with three recently
developed
cutting-edge
technologies.
They include the 4K CMOS imaging device
equipped with global shutter technology;
a dedicated low-power, high-speed signal
processor; and an Ultra High Bitrate (UHB)
transmission system.
The HDC-5500 joins Sony's HDC-3000
series.
Anticipating tomorrow's production needs
while maintaining full compatibility with
today's workflows and system hardware,
the series comprises HDC-P50 POV system
camera, the portable system camera HDC3500, as well as the Fiber and Triax system
cameras HDC-3100 and HDC-3170.
Similar to HDC-5500, the HDC-3000 series
is backward compatible and seamlessly

integrates with existing live production
infrastructures, including cameras and
camera control units.
"The new offering elegantly addresses
production needs such as 4K, HDR, HFR, IP,
digital, triax and wireless. For HDC-3500 and
the newly announced HDC-5500, the big
focus is on low noise levels, which is crucial
for those involved in HDR, and the global
shutter that eliminates strobing," explains
Takuma Wada, Head of Content Creation

Kong Limited. "In particular, the flagship
HDC-5500, with a newly-developed on-board
signal processor, can directly output 4K
signals without a dedicated external baseband
processor unit, on top of direct 4K signal
output via 12G-SDI. This is extremely useful
as media operators can save rack space
in the confines of an OB vehicle or studio
environment."
The HDC-5500, HDC-3500 and HDC-P50
cameras capture premium picture utilizing
Sony's advanced 2/3-inch 4K CMOS sensor
with global shutter technology, which
eliminates the 'jello effect' and banding noise.
The cameras offer high sensitivity - F10 (at
UHD/59.94p) and F11 (at UHD/50p) for the
HDC-5500; F10 (at 1080/59.94p) and F11
(at 1080/50p) for the HDC-3500 at 2,000 lx and a superior signal-to-noise ratio.

HDR Workflows
HDR capability is very much
in demand as it brings great
improvement to images and is
more noticeable for average
home watching experience.
With the support for Sony's
SR Live for HDR workflows,
both HDC-5500 and HDC3500 allow simultaneous 4K HDR and HD
SDR production by a single team. This
reduces hardware and personnel costs for
multi-format productions.
To supplement the offering, Sony's
HDC-P50 utilizes ultra-high precision
alignment technology, where three 4K sensors
on the newly developed prism achieves ITU-R
BT.2020 broadcast standard widened color
space.
As a result, the camera delivers
exceptionally
high-quality
images
in
demanding
4K/HDR
live
production
environments. Further, the HDC-3100
and HDC-3170 system cameras, ideal for
productions working primarily in HD, with
occasional need for 4K, are capable of HDR
and SMPTE ST 2110.
The HDC-3100 offers an optical fiber
transmission capability as standard, while the
HDC-3170 offers a digital triax transmission
capability.
