KVM Technology Provides Stability

roadcasting is in a constant state of
evolution. Unlike many though, the
broadcast sector seems to change completely,
periodically, rather than simply expanding and
building on what is already in place.
Over the past ten years the broadcast
industry has moved from analog to digital
technology, SD-HD transmission and is now
moving on to 4K and beyond. It experienced
a false start with 3D transmission, before
absorbing HDR technology and starting to
consider VR.
The latest stage in this ongoing evolution is
the shift toward IP technology, in contribution
and production stages as well as for content
delivery, as consumers shy away from
scheduled broadcast television services
to an on-demand, any-device, any-time
consumption that suits them better.

One area of stability in this sea of change
however lies in the operational procedures
within broadcast facilities and production
houses. Engineers, producers, editors and
other operational staff still need to be agile,
to adapt their approach to address the most
pressing task at any given moment and
remain on top of the jobs; at all times and
whatever the circumstances.
This means that they need to be able to
access and instantly switch between local
computer-based applications. Wherever they
are physically located and without fail. By far
the most efficient method of achieving this,
and one enjoyed by many modern broadcast
and post-production studios, is to employ a
KVM (Keyboard, Video and Mouse) switching
system. Rather than forcing users to
continually log-in to a network-based system
of client- and server-based computers,
each individual user can access any desired
computer through what is essentially a direct
and changeable, connection.
The advantages of this topography are clear
and apparent - no signal delay is introduced
by network transmission, no contention or
failed connections and above all no image
artefacts that might detract from the visual
representation and distract or mislead the

operator. And with instant switching between
applications, there is great flexibility in
operation: a user can change from one tool to
another without having to move desks, simply
and with the minimum of effort.
Naturally, the latest KVM technology
systems are evolving in line with industry
trends. In this case taking advantage of

IP connectivity over local and wide area
networks and opening paths into, and out of,
a KVM switch over a network.
This means that operators can access
virtual machines in exactly the same way that
they access real, physical devices. And they
can reach remote broadcast systems from
a distant location over a standard IP link -

securely and in real-time.
In a rapidly changing world, KVM technology
remains a stable and grounding influence that
greatly helps organizations streamline their
broadcast workflow.
