Expands Riedel Infrastructure
The House of Dancing Water, a breathtaking in-the-round water show created by the Franco Dragone
Entertainment Group for Macau's City of Dreams entertainment complex, has extended its in-house
communications capabilities with Riedel's Bolero wireless intercoms...

and integrated wireless capabilities that
leverage the facility's existing Riedel Artist
digital matrix intercom system that has been
in operation since 2014.

An Exceptional Comms System
for an Exceptional Show
The House of Dancing Water is the most
expensive production in Macau and the
largest water-based show in the world.
The show centers on an epic love story
and a spectacular journey through time,
showcasing dazzling costumes and special
effects. It features nearly 100 international
gymnasts, circus artists, dancers, divers,
actors, and motorcyclists, all supported
by 160 technicians, scuba divers, and
production staff. To enable clear and reliable
communications for all cast members
and crew throughout the Dancing Water
Theatre, the new Bolero system extends
the existing Riedel infrastructure, including
two Artist 64 and two Artist 32 frames, to
create a comprehensive wired and wireless
infrastructure.
Performers and technical teams use
the intercom system for continuous
communication during the show, as Bolero
provides seamless wireless coverage from
the heights of the trusses to the backstage
areas. In the aquatics area, Artist supports
communications with performers and
underwater performer handlers in the
pool via underwater speakers, in-mask

communications systems, and buddy
phones. For a show featuring motocross
riders jumping 20 meters across the
stage or acrobats performing daring dives
from heights of over 24 meters, reliable
communications are absolutely vital. Here,
any miscommunication can have grave
consequences and any slight deviation from
the meticulously planned choreography
can cause problems. To ensure the safety
of their performers, the Dancing Water
Theatre required an intercom solution with
unparalleled audio quality, reliability, and
versatility. Riedel's Bolero clearly was the
most viable option - especially since another
important requirement for the production was
programming flexibility. Bolero, fully integrated
with Artist, leverages Riedel's Director

software to facilitate intuitive configuration
and management of the system while also
allowing real-time system monitoring by the
sound department. This enables the team
to freely customize the system to meet the
needs of individuals and departments with the
click of a mouse.

Flexible Stages and Flexible
Communications
Designed by Pei Partnership Architects,
the state-of-the-art Dancing Water Theatre
includes a stage pool that holds a recordbreaking 3.7 million gallons of water,
equivalent to five Olympic-sized swimming
pools. The 270-degree theater with a seating
capacity of 2,000 has a central 25-meter
stage that can transform into different sets
within seconds. Eleven automated stage
lifts can be dropped seven meters below
the water's surface to create
a deep-dive pool, or be
raised to reveal a stage with
a spectacular 26-ton pirate
ship. The arena also boasts a
40-meter-high steel-trussed
space that provides the
generous heights required
for the show's diving and
acrobatics elements. With
artists and technicians moving
across these large distances
and heights in various light
conditions, a truly flexible,
reliable and straightforward
solution was needed.

Completely satisfied with Artist's reliability,
flexibility, and crystal-clear audio since the
original install in 2014, Dragone Macau
naturally chose Bolero for their wireless
comms upgrade. For complete and seamless
coverage in the entire facility - from office
areas to performance space and basement
facilities - 24 Bolero antennas were distributed
over 12 levels of theater. Supporting a total
of 60 Bolero Beltpacks, this system ensures
high-quality communication between crew
members, stunt performers, and actors
wherever they go. With its Riedel-exclusive
Advanced DECT Receiver, Bolero is equipped
to overcome any RF multipath issue, and its
RF anti-reflection technology makes it suitable
for the most demanding environments - like
Macau City's House of Dancing Water.
