Closing Keynote: Technology, Media, and the State
From the spinning jenny to self-driving cars, from the printing press to 5G, technology constantly
changes the way we live. Whether 5G or Blockchain, IoT or AI, technology is supposed to be an
elemental force transcending borders and solving humanity's problems. The scientists who invented the
atomic bomb had similar hopes. Our world system is bounded by national interests. The modern state
arose alongside and because of modern technology. The media, whose primary purpose is to be the
state's critic, can create reality as easily as it can reveal human truth. In the post-World War II world,
technology and media reigned over the state. That balance of power is now shifting. The state now
seeks to use technology and media for its own purposes. Geopolitics is no longer simply the context in
which we operate - it is the single biggest risk to our futures.
