competitive field of MAM...

M

edia Asset Management (MAM)
is one of those generic terms
that covers a multitude of operations
(and some would say, sins), but in
the world of broadcast essentially
covers the management of audio,
video and images. It is becoming more
and more relevant as operators seek
greater efficiency, speed of delivery
and fail-safe back-up. Widely reported
in these pages over recent months,
specialist MAM developers are offering
broadcasters increasingly efficient
systems to ensure smooth running of
their services, while also providing
fail-safe archival back-up. Here's what
they've been up to.
Dalet Digital Media Systems reports
that Cyprus Broadcasting Corporation
(CyBC) has employed Dalet Media Life
to improve the management of its
broadcast archives. Powered by the
Dalet Galaxy Media Asset Management
(MAM) platform, the reimagined CyBC
archive offers a unified repository
of assets that is directly connected
to production, content preparation
and content delivery workflows.
Leading the overall design, system
integration
and
implementation
was Dalet business partner, Pierides
TechnoSystems.
"CyBC required a sustainable
broadcast archive and has deployed
Dalet Media Life to meet and manage
this need," explains Ben Davenport,
Director of Marketing, Dalet. "As part
of the project, there is a strong focus

on importing and structuring existing
metadata and media files coming from
different systems. The Dalet MAM
platform will facilitate this as well
as integrate with current production
and playout systems, giving CyBC the
ability to better manage and share
legacy, current and future content."
Serving as the content hub for
radio, news, sports and commercial
broadcasts, CyBC archives span several
decades and contain video, audio,
books and documents stored on discs,
videotapes and siloed storage systems.
The new enterprise workflow
leverages
advanced
metadata
management
and
automation
capabilities
to
facilitate
the
complexities of transcoding content,
propagating metadata, tracking assets,
and distributing media. Dalet metadata
sets, as defined by CyBC bespoke
business rules, capture extensive
asset details, structure content access,
and assign content to the appropriate
archive tier, optimising the entire
storage and archive infrastructure.
"Making the switch to a tapeless
archive that can be accessed by all
departments is key to our strategy,"
explains Yioula Kyriacou, Engineer,
Radio & TV Studios, CyBC. "Not only
are we seeking to rationalise workflow
and maximise operational efficiencies
by migrating to file-based, we intend
to synchronise our access in a way that
optimises our ability to re-purpose

led us to demand an enterprise level
MAM solution with proven integrity in
a broadcast operation and one that
would interface perfectly with our
existing systems. Dalet Media Life is
that platform."
At last month's BroadcastAsia
in Singapore, Tedial confirmed a
major sale of its Tarsys enterprise
MAM system to Indian public service
broadcaster, Doordarshan. The Tedial
system, installed at Doordarshan's
Kolkata facility provides
its operators with core
and
browser-based
desktop media tools as
well as a fully integrated
archive system, able
to scale in volume and
throughput. The Tedial
archive will connect to
Doordarshan's sites in
other regions as well
as its central archive in
Delhi.

overseas through the Indian Network
and also Radio India. As well as
delivering a fully equipped archive,
Tedial's Tarsys MAM will enable
Doordarshan to ingest its existing
U-matic, Betacam SP, DVCPR050 and
XDCAM HD422 programme content
stored on tapes and optical disc media,
into the system in both high and low
resolution formats. Tarsys is fully
integrated with 30TB of HP Online
Storage and a 48-slot HP LTO6 tape
library as well as Tektronix Cerify QC
for automated quality control of filebased content. It enables operators
at the facility to browse, catalogue,
search and store content via the Tedial
web-client.
