Fredrik Tumegård: Net Insight

The media industry has largely been
driven by technology, with technology
departments having the biggest say in
purchasing decisions. However, at Net
Insight we have noted a clear shift,
with progress now being significantly
influenced by professional end-users

sales, marketing, product development
and competence development. I'm
pleased to say that we are now more

that we conducted, showed that Net
Insight's strengths are in having
tremendous knowledge of the media
ecosystem, a genuine appreciation of
technology and a deep understanding

paying for, delivering live and local
content that makes them a part of
their world and supporting interactive
experiences that consumers want to be
part of.
InB: What trends do you see in the
broadcast media world?
FT: Cost pressures are encouraging
broadcasters to increase their use of
remote production.
They increasingly need to make more
efficient use of production resources
and, in recent years, the use of remote
production for live music and sporting
events has become widespread. This
typically involves bringing all video
signals from a venue to a central
production site, which avoids the
considerable costs involved in sending
fully staffed Outside Broadcast
(OB) trucks to venues. As this trend
continues to rise, the demand for more
dynamic transmission connectivity
between
broadcaster
facilities,
production houses, virtual studios and
event venues grow.
This is prompting broadcasters and
network providers to rethink and focus
on changing how they work. Not only
do they need to produce more highquality content, they need to do it for
less. As more video signals are brought
in externally, transmission capacity
must be adaptable and changes must
be allowed in real-time.
This places a huge burden on
network providers to deliver live video
services on-demand for any content
anywhere, at any time. Net Insight's
Customer
Provisioned
Networks
solution makes this possible. The
solution gives broadcasters a flexible
network-on-demand
service
that

lets them pay for only the capacity
they use. It also unlocks new pricing
models for network providers and
lets them get the most out of their
networks. We see this as the future
of the broadcasting industry, where
broadcasters only pay for the capacity
they use in transmitting live video
content, while simplifying the process
of booking network capacity.
InB: Explain what Customer
Provisioned Networks means?
FT:
Net Insight's Customer
Provisioned
Networks
allow
broadcasters to book and provision
transmission capacity in a service
provider network when they need it.
This is done via a simple self-service
portal, which shows availability and
cost in real-time, making it possible
for broadcasters to integrate long
haul video transmission into their
production processes. The solution
provides full control of transmission
capacity so that it can be embedded
into
automated
and
dynamic
workflows.
Customer Provisioned Networks
give network service providers the
opportunity to use network capacity
and resources more efficiently.
Because customers can book capacity
with time-based consumption and
pricing, they can avoid paying for
dedicated capacity, which also gives
broadcasters greater flexibility in the
way they work.
InB: Give an example of your
Customer Provisioned Networks
solution in action?
FT: A good example is one of our
major US customers, The Switch.
The Switch pioneered customerinitiated video services and provides
services to media markets in the
US and major international sites.
In the pursuit of fast, automated
provisioning of media services, and
to support new workflows, The Switch
chose Net Insight's open provisioning
and software defined networking
functionality to offer its customers
self-provisioning - the ability to order

network capacity via a web portal.
Their customer portal SwitchIT and
service provisioning are conducted
through Net Insight's solution partner
ScheduALL's management system
ScheduLINK.
The Switch's network serves most
of the leading media corporations in
the US. The network also transmits
many of the major U.S. Major sports
league broadcasts, and is continuously
expanding to new customers and
sites. Each customer has a tailored
portal enabling them to book and
schedule national and international
connections without the need to
contact customer support or technical
staff. This revolutionary combination
of technology and business modelling
gives the media market a new way to
work on production and distribution,
as well as offering rapid network
connections.
