Las Vegas rounds up some of the exhibits
on the NAB Show floor that caught his eye...

AB 2019 was a show of merging
extremes with the first signs
that 8K prices were descending from
stratospheric to high-end prosumer.
Dangling above the front entrance to
Las Vegas Convention Center were a
series of flags promoting Blackmagic's
first foray into 8K, claiming that the
company was introducing almost
every element of the 8K production
chain. But no camera. That left room
for a real jaw-dropper: a DSLR-style
8K video camera exhibited by Sharp
with a price point that fully justified
the beaming smiles on the company's
Central Hall stand.

Broadcasters may not want 8K or
even 4K. But 8K is where television
productions and displays are going, at
affordable prices. The only question
is when. Sharp anticipates that its
8K camera will be deliverable by Q1
2020. It has a micro four-thirds inch
imager, an HD LCD viewfinder and a
direct video output. Recording is at
30 frames per second to a slot-in SD
card, currently available in up to 1TB
capacity. Camera price is expected
to be around US$4,000 with first
deliveries in Q1 2020.
On the same stand, Sharp showed
an 8K LED display combining high
brightness with the uncompromised
black normally associated with
OLEDs. Elsewhere in the show
(Future Technology zone, North Hall)
LG demonstrated an almost zero
thickness 8K OLED screen bonded to a
thin rigid substrate. Wall-size displays
are coming though one wonders how
they will ever by manoeuvred into
a corporate board room, let alone a
domestic living room.
AJA Video Systems introduced the
Ki Pro Go portable H.264 HD and SD
redundant recorder/player. This can
capture up to four channels of HD and

SD content from SDI and HDMI sources
to standard USB memory. Genlock free
recording eliminates the need to sync
the four input sources. Redundant
recording provides multiple backups.
Anevia exhibited a new version of
its Genova File encoder which allows
OTT video delivery operators to cut
their hardware costs to about onetenth the cost of traditional CPU-based
encoding. Genova File is a high-density
encoder designed to handle 4K/UHD
content. Operators using Genova File
and the established Genova Live can
prepare their ad assets so they are
encoded in the exact same way as
their live feeds, enabling seamless
switching from content to ad.

production switcher is designed for
productions that rely on IP-based
workflows and remote cameras. It has
six network inputs that support NDI
and RTSP sources. Along with two SDI/
HDMI inputs (including one analogue
input for legacy sources), it can receive
up to six IP camera feeds. Operating at
up to 1080p/60, it integrates MPEG-2,
H.264 and other streaming formats
in the same production, and provides
SDI, HDMI, analogue, and streaming
outputs.
Calrec's VP2 virtual mixer uses
Calrec's Assist software for setup and
control. VP2's 4U core comes in three
DSP sizes; 128, 180 and 240 input
channels and incorporates Calrec's
Hydra2 networking. Calrec Serial
Control Protocol allows the console to
be completely automated.
Decimator's new 12G-Cross is an
HDMI/SDI 4K cross converter. The 4K
scaler can be driven by either the SDI
or HDMI input, allowing horizontal

and/or vertical flipping. It can be
locked to either the SDI, HDMI or
genlock input.
Digigram's Iqoya Talk portable
IP audio codec allows remote
reporters to perform all the key
actions in just two clicks. Live
reporting or commentary can
be performed, as well as studioquality interviews for up to four
journalists and guests. Audio
content can then be streamed
through a multiple wired or wireless
'last mile' connections.
Embrionix' new emVirtu is designed
to offer up to 64 x IP processing
functions or, for HD environments, up
to 256 x IP processing functions in a
1U passive frame. Users can combine
and interchange different virtual IP
processing services that include frame
synchronisers, down converters, up/
down/cross converters, multiviewers,
and colour processors. UHD and
HD modules can also be deployed
simultaneously.

CMOS sensors, a sensitivity of F11
and a typical signal-to-noise ratio of
62 dB, allowing use even in difficult
lighting conditions. The camera can
perform HD-downconversion and HD
cutout, enabling an easy integration
into existing HD workflows. Ethernet
control allows easy remote operation.
