Ocula is another to talk of
enrichment and how systems have
to navigate increasingly complex
metadata hierarchies as a result.
"Clips used to be described with fixed
metadata profiles and independent
tags," he says. "We now see more
complex hierarchical tag structures,
which allows to link tags and enrich the
metadata of video clips. For example,
the tag of a player will be defined by
his name, number, nationality, age,
and team. The tag of a team will be
defined by its name, location and
league. Such structure allows EVS' IPDVIA to return search results based on
all clips which have a linked tag and
order them on basis of their relevancy
to speed up the search process."
It also sounds like the company is
working on something interesting in
the field of AI and interpreting on-field
action. "Our innovation team has been
very active with the development of
offside line technology in football or
controlling robotic cameras. The team

has also been busy with automated
logging, but we are not ready to reveal
any further information about this at
this stage."
One to keep an eye on.
Also worth keeping an eye on is
what will happen as a result of what
will happen following Telestream's
acquisition of EcoDigital, which
was, of course, formerly Front
Porch Digital. This will see the close
integration of Telestream's Vantage
Media Processing Platform with Eco's
Diva content management systems.
Metadata compatibility is a crucial
part of this sort of integration, but
happily is something that Telestream
is making a bit of a speciality of.
Only last month it announced a new
integration in Vantage with Frame.io
that allows media files and metadata
processed by Vantage in preparation
for collaborative editing to be
automatically dropped directly into
Frame.io user folders for seamless
collaboration and review & approval
workflows.
Marquis, a company whose whole
raison d'être is to move media and
metadata between different systems
in broadcast and post production
workflows has been having an
understandably busy year in these
times of remote workflows. Its
Medway maintains metadata across
platforms through genealogy, and has
been particularly useful in ensuring
remote working on Avid, delivering
cost-effective integration between
a company's broadcast content
applications and edit platforms, both
standalone and using shared storage
(also cloud). As a result, complex
workflows with advanced metadata
can be seamlessly integrated.
Dejero has a neat solution, Dejero
Control, that allows for the metadata
to be created and associated with
content prior to creation. Uploaded

clips from the field have a significant
amount of information automatically
generated so that relevant footage can
easily be pulled using search criteria
like talent name, geolocation, date,
news type, etc.; as well as including
key fields for production such as
contributing unit and file size.

points to a future where AI and ML
capabilities can further enrich it.
"Layering in AI capabilities to a
cloud-based workflow -including facial
recognition, metadata tagging, and
speech-to-text functionality-enhances
collaboration between traditional
newsroom and digital teams to
produce stories faster than ever
before," she says.
The company has done some
interesting work in the areas too.
"Dejero has proven that a lowlatency live feed from a Dejero
encoder can be transported over
multiple IP connections, using Dejero's
Smart Blending Technology, and
received in the cloud by a virtualized
Dejero receiver," she explains.
"Once in a cloud services platform,
metadata enrichment and tagging,
facial recognition, and speech-to-text
functionality can then be enabled
using a video indexer, automatically
enhancing the live content through
artificial intelligence. With rich
metadata added to the incoming
video content, newsroom teams save
valuable time searching and retrieving
media assets, and it enables new
capabilities such as breaking news
alerts. This combined technology
helps newsrooms take advantage of
AI and automation to enhance their
efficiency in producing content for
global audiences across traditional and
digital formats."
Finally, Kristan Bullett at Piksel
sums up the pain points surrounding
the current use of metadata neatly as
follows:

*	 Accuracy - Around 70% of all
metadata from post production houses
arrives with errors of some kind;
*	 Consistency

impacts
discovery,
experience and monetization;
*	 Silos - No central metadata store
makes sharing and validation near
impossible;
*	 Duplication - Time is wasted
editing and managing data that
already exists elsewhere;
*	 Scalability - The only way to
scale is to add more people and more
systems.
Piksel sees increasingly sophisticated
AI/ML techniques, such as features
with its Fuse IQ, as being able to deal
with some of the problems in the
system once a media organisation has
control of its workflows.
From there it can rationalise what
are traditionally manually heavy
but relatively basic tasks and free
up resources to enable operational
scalability.
"Tools such as Fuse IQ are essential,
once control of the underlying
workflows has been harnessed to
ensure a shift from manually-heavy
and therefore slow processes to
machine-driven automated processes,"
says Bullett. "This will free video
and broadcast production from the
established shackles and allow them
to become more competitive to the
next generation platforms (i.e. Netflix,
Amazon Prime, etc.)"
