Compliance Monitoring Making The News
Digital technology has brought greater flexibility to system design, enabling products designed
for one function to be used for something completely different. As Erik Otto, Chief Executive of

he 24-hour news culture is part of
modern life. When CNN went on
air in 1980 as the first all-day, all-news
television channel, how people stayed
up to date with current events changed
forever. Traditional news bulletins at
set times - the Six O'Clock News, News
at Ten - has survived but CNN and the
channels that followed it - Fox News,
MSNBC, BBC News, Sky News - set a
faster agenda with coverage of stories
as they happen.
The pace has only accelerated
since the advent of social media.
News organizations now not only
have to outdo each other by being
first with a story on conventional TV
but also get in as fast as they can on
Twitter, Facebook and Instagram.
Newsgathering techniques have also
changed dramatically, with reporters
using the cameras on their mobile
phones to produce footage ahead of a
full camera crew arriving on the scene.
The recent events in the US have

shown that news is not always
covered from all angles.
While some broadcasters
had journalists and camera
operators on site, other
reporters used their phones
to bring actuality of what was
happening as it occurred.
All of which shows that TV
news organizations have to
deal with reports coming in
to broadcast centres from a variety of
sources in many different formats.
As ever, this is not anything new.
Broadcasters have been dealing with
incoming feeds over satellite, fiber
and IP circuits for many years. These
have now been joined by Zoom, Skype
and other mobile video call formats.
While viewing audiences are willing to
forgive lower quality signals because
of the immediacy, the sources still
need to be monitored to ensure
that standards are not completely
overlooked.
