The advantages of the
Hybrid MAM approach
F

or many media organizations, the
only viable option in the past has
been to purchase a turnkey Media Asset
Management (MAM) system. Built with
a large degree of customization, these
types of deployments have found a
reputation for becoming monolithic
projects that are hard to scope and
resource hungry.
An alternative approach has been
to " Build it Yourself " . Working with
an internal development team, this
method can take advantage of a
completely custom, " built from spec "
system with " agile " deployment,
gradual on-boarding and high levels of
engagement across the organization.
While
easing
any
" change
management " concerns, and with
potentially attractive " start up " costs,
the ongoing maintenance and life-cycle
management of such solutions, as well
as management or SLA coordination
of the underlying technology stack
requires significant ongoing resource
in-vestment. Furthermore, TCO (Total

Cost of Ownership) is often found
to be significantly higher than a
" purchased " solution.
But there is a third way. An
approach that takes the best
elements of " turnkey " and BIY
and enables you to build a MAM
solution that exactly meets your
requirements, adapts and scales
to changing business needs and
provides strong ROI.
Most
vendors
of
complex
management systems like MAM
offer some sort of API (Application
Programmer Interface) that enables
end users or third parties to integrate
or extend that vendors software. Few,
however, have taken the " eating your
own dog food " way of thinking and put
the API at the center of their approach
- meaning that any applications or

services offered by that vendor are
built upon the same core media
management back-end, using the same
toolkits and API as any 3rd party apps
or integrations.
If you're leaning more to the
" purchase " path with your MAM
solution, this approach has the
advantage that the system will likely
be integrated more easily and swiftly
to existing infrastructure but also give
you the confidence that the system
can easily adapt to changing business
requirements, quickly adding new
components as needed.
If you're more in the BIY camp,

this approach offers an established
and robust back-end to build your
solution on, removing the complexity
of managing the complete technology
stack. In addition, a comprehensive API
and UI development toolkit ensures
that you can rapidly realize new
ideas and concepts and go from
" zero to MVP " (Minimum Viable
Product) in hours if not minutes.
Of course, if all the applications
and services utilize the same APIs
and core back-end, that implies
they will live happily alongside
each other. This enables you to
take this third, " hybrid " approach
and mix and match " off-the-shelf "
components, such as a web-based
video editor, with your own developed
user interfaces, such as a customized
review and approval tool. In this way,
you can avoid " reinventing the wheel "
while also ensuring that your MAM
solution is completely tailored to the
needs of your organization, now and
for the future.
