ToolsOnAir Launches New Versions
of Their Playout, Ingest & Storage
Products, Addressing the
Mid-to-High-End-Segment
Why ToolsOnAir?
When we started ToolsOnAir over a
decade ago, we set ourselves the goal
of developing best-of-class broadcast
solutions for the Apple platform with
a strong focus on unrivaled usability,
easy deployment using off-the-shelf
hardware, and pioneered the idea
and concept of the " TV Station in a
Mac " . Over the years we expanded our
solutions portfolio, with the addition
of Linux based ingest systems, paying
great attention to the needs of our
customers for enterprise-grade
deployments, therefore proposing
complete solutions for broadcast
ingest, live production, and automated
playout as well as high-performance
storage systems addressing the midto-high-end
segment. During the
past year, we extended the focus
positioning the company even better
for future orientations and have
filled key positions with experienced
former staff members to underpin
ToolsOnAir's commitment to develop
and offer highly innovative, powerful,
and
intuitive
ingest,
playout,
and
storage solutions to accommodate
the daily needs of a TV station or
broadcast production facility whilst
maintaining a cost-effective approach.
Though consolidating the team was
a natural measure, the development
of our ingest, playout, and storage
solutions was efficaciously pursued,
and we are pleased to share the latest
news throughout this article.
Small form factor and premium
performance: just:in linux 5.0
Over a decade ago, when building
our first ingest solution line for
macOS, we paid special attention to
the conformity to industry standards
and the usability aspects of the
user interface. We still provide the
highest user experience on the macOS
platform but needed an enterprisegrade
server
backend
solution
to
match
both the needs for ingest
channel density per box, especially in
the HD and UHD space and the lower
rack space availability constraints at
our premium broadcast and OB van
customers. The logical answer was
the introduction of our just:in linux
appliances that were designed to
empower broadcasters and production
facilities to accelerate their HD and
UHD ingest tasks with full support
for industry-standard codecs and
containers and a maximum form
factor of 2 RU for up to 8 UHD/2 UHD2
recording channels. The just:in linux
5.0 enterprise-grade ingest servers
are engineered to provide highdensity
multichannel recording of
SDI, HDMI, NDI®, and SRT sources, to
either the internal HDD or SSD RAID, a
companion just:store or any qualified
broadcast storage system. To enable
fast turnaround productions, just:in
linux 5.0 provides a straightforward
setup
of
capture,
destination,
and
metadata presets, definable user login
templates, full growing file support,
Split-While-Recording, Infinite Chunk,
and Scheduled recording functionality
and finally, strong integration in Avid
environments, as the new version
adds supports for the Avid DNxHD
and DNxHR codecs in the MXF OP1a
container.
Thanks to the combined ability to
use concurrent capture instances
alongside the flexible yet powerful XML
sidecar file creation mechanism, just:in
linux 5.0 is the ideal ingest solution
for MAM integrations, where High-Res
and Proxy files need to be generated
concurrently and delivered as a logical
package including the XML sidecar file
containing the relevant technical and
descriptive metadata. But we didn't
stop there: with the introduction of
Markers support for Adobe Premiere
Pro in just:in linux 5.0, operators
can set Markers while recording SDI,
NDI®,HDMI or SRT sources and have
these markers automatically displayed
in Adobe Premiere Pro's timeline
for efficient post-production editing.
Additionally, one can define Marker
Sets, with different Marker types to
further facilitate the setup of eventspecific
recordings.
The ingest channels are controlled
by a clearly arranged and operatororiented
macOS-based user interface,
namely just:control, to operate all
recording and post-recording tasks of
the selected ingest channels. This new
release has been received extremely
well
by
major
broadcasters
and
production facilities and we have been
very pleased with the great customer
acceptance, the achieved sales results
so far and the constantly growing
number of enquiries.
High Quality Ingest on Apple
hardware: just:in mac 5.0
just:in mac 5.0 is our macOSbased
client-server ingest solution
designed to capture SDI, HDMI, NDI®,
multicamera, and VTR sources using
industry
standard
Crash,
Batch,
or
Scheduled recording modes. With the
latest release of just:in mac 5.0, we
have laid the foundation for current
and
future
Apple
hardware
and
software versions and thus confirmed
our repeated commitment to the Apple
platform. In addition to the already

known standard features of just:in
mac, version 5.0 introduces the highly
requested NDI® and Avid DNxHD/
DNxHR codec support (in the MXF OP1a
container) as well as full compatibility
with macOS Catalina and macOS Big
Sur. Native Apple Silicon support will
follow with a timely update, once
all needed third-party components
have qualified for Apple Silicon based
computers.
Multicamera Workflow
Evergreen: live:cut 5.0
live:cut 5.0, a license option for
either just:in mac 5.0 or just:in linux
5.0 enables multicamera production
workflows for up to 16 cameras and
is designed to optimise multicamera
productions by eliminating timeconsuming
processes. From talk,
games and product placement shows
to sitcoms up to live concerts and
event recordings, live:cut 5.0 works
by centralizing ingest, metadata, live
logging, media management and
workflow automation in a single,
easy to use interface option for the
just:in 5.0 solution family. Re-edits
and post-production tasks can be
immediately performed, even while
the recording is running. Camera
cuts can be applied from within the
just:control application, by using a
standard vision mixer (in combination
with the TOA GPI-BOX) or as a direct
SDK integration with Blackmagic
Design ATEM switchers. In combination
with the outstanding form factor and
channel density of just:in linux 5.0 and
a Blackmagic Design ATEM switcher,
live:cut is the ideal solution OB van and
live production multicamera setups.
