How to visualize HDR

he way the human brain

colour is fascinating. With a world
around us that appears to be so vibrant
and rich, it would be easy to think that
our eyes are sophisticated evolutionary
organs full of a multitude of complex
sensors. But the truth is that in the
grand scheme of things, our eyes are
quite simplistic - indeed, we only have
three types of colour sensing cone;
red, blue and green (not the primary
colours, nor the CMYK you might
expect).
So what explains the rich tapestry
around us? The answer is no surprise:
our brains. The majority of the colours
we see are our brain's best guess at
what is happening. It's effectively
the ol' grey sponge filling in the gaps
where information is missing. And that
goes doubly for magenta: the colour
that bridges the gap between the
extreme ends of the colour spectrum
- red and blue. Our brain had to get
really inventive for that one.
But whether colour is made up or
not, there's no doubt it's incredibly
important to viewers, and as broadcast
technology develops, so too do viewer
expectations. Viewers are becoming
increasingly discerning in relation to
image quality.
The problem is, whilst HDR provides
an answer to this, it results in both
added expense and complexity
for content producers. Normally,
producing in HDR calls for a range of
expensive equipment and monitors
devoted to the standard. This is not
just costly, but cumbersome - resulting
in a real hurdle for remote and
distributed productions, where weight
and space are at a premium.
It is this challenge that the most
recent addition to Bridge Technologies'
award-winning VB440 addresses. The
VB440 was built with one idea in mind;
to provide a comprehensive suite of
production tools in a single space,
accessible from anywhere in the world
with an HTML-5 browser. Whether it's
audio, colour, subtitles - whatever
the type of compression (or none),
the VB440 supports visualisation for
production specialists in real-time,
with next to no latency.
And now, it also facilitates HDR
production: efficient, accessible,
intuitive. As well as introducing a
range of waveform scopes for the
visualisation
underpinning
data;
including an adjustable Graticule,
CIE Chromaticity scope, IRE and
NIT visualization - the VB440 does
something else that hasn't been seen
on the market before: it provides a
visual preview of an HDR output image
even through a non-HDR compatible
browser.
It's clever stuff. By converting the
specific codings of the HDR image into
the SRGB colourspace of the browser,
the VB440 effectively 'mimics' a
localised preview of what the HDR
output will be like for audiences.
Which is nearly as clever as what the
brain manages to do with colour. And
just as portable.
