Hitting the ball out of the
park: LiveU's year of sport

rom the crisp chink of a golf club on
a ball to the thwack of a baseball
bat as it strikes a home run, the echoing
bounce of basketballs to the sound of
sport that was the Summer Games in
Tokyo, 2021 has been a year of huge
sporting achievement for LiveU as the
world further embraces the power of
IP bonding. Let's take a look at some
of those key highlights across the year.
This summer saw leading sports
producers IMG create a LiveU-led,
full

12-camera
remote
production,
live broadcast of all three days of the
41st Curtis Cup, the best-known team
trophy for women amateur golfers.
Co-organised by the R&A and United
States Golf Association, the biennial
event saw a team of eight amateurs
from the USA compete against a team
from Great Britain and Ireland. Held
in Conwy Golf Club in North Wales,
IMG used LiveU technology - including
the multi-camera capabilities of our
flagship LU800 production-level field
unit - to remotely produce more than
25 hours of captivating, high-quality
coverage, which was broadcast live
on Sky Sports Golf, Sky Sports Mix and
NBC's Golf Channel.

The Summer Games in Tokyo saw a
lot of records broken and LiveU joined
in as it reported a 400% deployment
increase in live broadcasts compared
to Rio 2016. This reflects the growing
trust and reliance on LiveU's solutions
for high-quality, reliable and costeffective
live
broadcasts,
replacing
traditional
satellite and fibre methods
for main event coverage as well as
interviews and behind-the-scenes.
Over 1,300 units were used, delivering
19,000 live sessions from the different
sporting events to 50 countries
worldwide and 50,000 hours of
continuous live broadcasts. Camera
crews got closer to the action than
ever with LiveU units used at every
venue - inside the stadiums, outside on
the tracks, and on water.
Used for the first time at a major
international sporting event was
LiveU's LU800 native 5G productiongrade
solution, using NTT DOCOMO's
5G, with its multi-camera capabilities
providing dynamic coverage from
multiple angles. But this time it wasn't
only about units on the ground, it was
also about the use of LiveU Matrix IP
cloud video management solution for
live content sharing over the public
internet, a first for a major sporting
event.
Of course, LiveU's sporting successes
weren't only across broadcast, as a
story from Australia clearly shows. For
the first time, the National Basketball
League (NBL) of Australia succeeded
in live streaming every state basketball
game,
significantly
in
a
year
increasing
popularity of NBL1, Australia's
professional semi-elite basketball
league
impacted
by
the pandemic. Using LiveU Solo
wireless video encoders at arenas
across Australia, and LiveU's cloud
architecture to stream to online
video platforms, this meant fans
could watch over 900 NBL1 live
games,
including
final
matches
and highlights, and follow their
favourite teams and players. The
cloud-based remote production is
powered by Australian broadcast
services company, 5stream and
online production platform,
Cloudmix.
In Germany, Sky Deutschland
and Vodafone teamed up with
the
important network slicing feature
possible in 5G networks, ensuring
highest service reliability required for
such major sporting events.

LiveU on a Bundesliga 5G test for
next-gen sports production. LiveU
played a central role in the successful
5G trial alongside the pay-TV operator
and cellular provider, trialling
wireless
5G
transmissions
with
multiple cameras to demonstrate the
powerful possibilities for engaging
live sports provided by the integrated
workflow. The test also highlighted 5G
network slicing capabilities, creating
guaranteed bandwidth. It took place at
a Bundesliga 2 match between Fortuna
Düsseldorf and VSL Osnabrück at the
Merkur Spiel Arena in Düsseldorf.
The test showed the reliability and
mobility of LiveU's wireless technology
for major sports, allowing
camera
people to take a more innovative
approach to increase fan engagement
with greater dynamism and a faster
set up time than using traditional
methods. The test also explored the
LiveU NBL Australia
sports
broadcasting. LiveU's technology
- with which we are already familiar -
was key to the trial, showing how the
latest
wireless
capabilities
dovetail
with these new network capabilities,
allowing truly innovative workflows,
with far greater camera position
flexibility and very fast time to air. It
means that we can now really begin
to think differently and realise the full
possibilities these technologies allow. "
Meanwhile, Japan's J SPORTS,
with production partner Express,
chose LiveU's multi-camera remote
production solution to cover baseball
games - all of Yokohama DeNA
BayStars' home games this season.
J SPORTS' OTT service, J SPORTS On
Demand, is showing over 70 matches
with LiveU's technology playing a
central role in enhancing the viewing
experience.
Kanji Kato, Technical Director,
Express, said, " We really wanted to
transmit multiple camera signals via
mobile networks and, of course, it had
to be extremely reliable. Originally, we
were planning to send multiple
camera feeds via Ethernet but
demonstrations
from
LiveU
proved to us that our original
ambition was completely possible.
They showed us the next level of
remote production, with reliable
tally light and additional audio
functionality via the multi-camera
LU800, facilitating bi-directional
communications between the
field staff and control room. We
were convinced that LiveU was the
production technology partner we
needed to help create a successful
remote production business. "
And they were right. And now for
2022...
