Déjà Vu Heading into 2022

s I write this, it's hard not to think
" here we go again. " Another new
virus variant is dominating the news
cycles and threatening setbacks
in
pandemic recovery efforts. And from
a technology perspective, some of the
advances we predicted last year - or
even at the beginning of 2020 - have
taken longer than expected to fully
materialize, impeded by both the
pandemic and component supply chain
issues.
I wrote two years ago about the
impact that 5G would have on content
production. With 5G infrastructure now
rolled out or being built in many more
areas of the globe, this potential is
now starting to be realized. Compared
to 4G, the higher bandwidth and
lower latency of 5G are huge steps
forward for remote contribution and
production.
Combined
with
robust
delivery protocols such as SRT, 5G is
ushering in new efficiencies for REMI
(Remote Integration Model) production
models.
As beneficial as 5G can be on its
own, we believe it is a combination
of 5G, the cloud, and GPU-powered
AI that will enable revolutionary
advances in production workflows.
AI-driven algorithms leveraging the
computational throughput of GPUs
will enable even higher resolutions,
new stylizations, and advanced special
effects. Running all of this in the cloud
and connecting producers to it via 5G
will enable complete, sophisticated
workflows that are accessible at all
levels of production, not just for big
media enterprises.
Another sense of déjà vu comes from
the ongoing evolution of multiple new
codecs. We expect to see adoption of
both AV1 and VVC continue to grow,
both in terms of platforms supporting
them and increasing usage of these
formats for distribution. Unlike early
codec " wars " , however, living
in a
multi-codec world is easier for content
consumers today, with viewing devices
and apps typically shielding audiences
from the underlying details.
When computers were the most
common means of watching streamed
content, viewers often had to ensure
they had a compatible decoder
installed for each type of stream. With
mobile devices, smart TVs, and set-top
boxes all running apps today - and
browser-based experiences typically
supporting automatic codec fall-back -
consumers rarely need to give codecs
a second thought. Many viewers may
even be using a newer codec without
even realizing it (or caring about it).
Netflix and YouTube, for example,
already utilize AV1 for select content,
but most audience members simply
care that when they click to watch a
movie, episode, or clip, it just plays.

eye on these and other technologies as
we plan and refine our roadmap. We're
as excited as you to see how quickly

DGI-NexGen-Solo is a USB 2.0 plugin
ultra-compact digital terrestrial
television tuner which provides full
access to all locally receivable free-toair
channels.
Based on the concept of ADTH's

DGI

SD/HD
USB
plug-in DTV tuner, the DGI-NexGenSolo
is fully ATSC 1.0 and ATSC 3.0
compatible and has a form factor of
only 93 x 27 x 12mm. Power is sourced
directly from the USB port. Antenna
connection is via an integral screwthread
coax input. Included software
enables the plug-in to turn a computer
or Android device into a gateway to
platforms such as iOS and Roku. It also
offers compatibility with third-party
streaming media services including
Plex.
" The DGI-NexGen-Solo includes a
wide range of features that make
NextGen TV viewing easy and
enjoyable, at home or while traveling, "

watch live TV, pause and store the
program stream for up to 60 minutes
or wind back for up to five minutes.
Viewers also gain full access to the
electronic program guide and program
information
synopses
normally
associated with large-screen domestic
TVs, plus closed captioning features
for people with restricted hearing. We
are confident the DGI-NexGen-Solo will
help
accelerate
the
transition from
HD to 4K UHD TV viewing across the
United States over coming months and
years. "
First deployed in South Korea ahead
of the 2019 Winter Olympics and now
being introduced across the USA, ATSC
3.0 is being promoted across the USA
as 'NextGen TV'. It encompasses a
host of capabilities including 2160p
4K resolution, 120 frames per second
frame rate, high dynamic range, wide
color gamut, surround sound and
datacasting.
