Three Essentials of Monitoring
and Diagnostics for Outside
Broadcast in an IP World

M
obile live production is joining
the industry in the move to IP
infrastructure. But SDI video isn't
going away soon, so we must deal
with hybrid topologies into the future.
IP adoption is
accelerating due,
largely, to technical developments in
IP switch design offering more speed
and reliability. In many cases outside
broadcasters (OB) can implement
IP at lower cost than SDI. But the
increasing sources and destinations
and the inherent indeterminacy of IP,
mean accurate timing and the ease
of identifying and troubleshooting
issues
imply a range of new
challenges.
IP-based truck designers are now
experienced with network design,
efficient
topologies
that
support
bandwidth and expansion needs,
and the subtle anomalies they must
look for in diagnosing problems.
The fundamental issue is that those
anomalies
are so subtle they're
often beyond what is noticeable on a
monitor wall by a human.
Three considerations are essential
to the implementation of IP-based OB
vehicles: accurate timing, proactive
monitoring/problem identification,
and
fast
environment.
Without
timing, nothing
else functions. Precision time
protocol
(PTP) is
standard in IP
media networks, but in hybrid
environments, synchronizing SDI and
analog equipment is as crucial as the
IP gear. Timing information must be
received via black burst and genlock,
but must exactly match the IP timing.
A state-of-the-art
synchronization
generator like the Telestream
SPG9000 makes that possible.
The

independent PTP outputs so you
can use it across two separate IP

leader, or follower and supports

reacquired.
