Trends and Challenges in Live and
Remote/Distributed Production

T
he past 12 months has seen our
virtualized products
catch the
attention of the broadcast market
in a big way. The Telos Infinity™
Virtual Intercom Platform (VIP) has
established itself as the 'go to'
solution for Intercom within Cloud
Production environments
and
in
doing so, has presented many new
technical and commercial challenges
to the business. Some we anticipated,
but many we didn't.
Towards the start of the pandemic
when we first started to talk to
customers about
it seemed that
virtualization,
acceptance that
talking
there was an
compromising
workflows was going to be the
new normal. As time moved on
(we're
years
in
here) and
months
not
technology
became more capable, it seems
that there is an increasing belief
that cloud solutions should be

able to handle everything that
'traditional' technology
can
do.
Early
adopters who have
been with us since the start
of the journey
understand
that this is not quite the reality,
not yet. We have learned together
that to build secure and resilient
virtual
deployable
systems requires a high

degree of IT competency. Building
an agile, low latency, high quality
cloud
communication
system capable of serving client
users on both private networks and
across the 'dirty' internet, relies on
techniques that are alien to most
broadcast system architects. As we
have become the experts helping
our customers achieve their goals,
we have learned to be patient and
always
expect the unexpected.
Our job is to share the knowledge
and
self-sustaining.
From a business
perspective
we've faced new challenges too.
Many clients still want a buyout
model
where they own their
leave our customers
software solution outright, paying an
annual SLA for premium support and
updates, while others want a system
that is bought through subscription,
paying only for what they want, when
they want it. As a company whose
business has
previously operated
almost entirely through box sales,
the latter presents a new set of
challenges, but also an opportunity
to evolve.

Teleporting Talents in XR Environments
T
ele-transporting a remote
talent
to our broadcast
studio, live, and be able to
interact with him/her is not
science fiction at all. We are not
talking about a remote video
connection to a screen, but
having the remote person in
our own set, as if that person
was really with us, realistically
enough to make the audience
believe he/she is on the set and
not somewhere else.
So, tele-transport
means
integrating a remote talent,
captured in chroma, in another real
environment, to create the illusion
that the talent is in the same space
as the person on the studio. And
of course, it can be integrated both
in a real set (as an AR object), in a
hyper-realistic virtual set, or also in
a live XR LED screen, maintaining
its
correct
size, perspective and
fit within the scene. The talent
should also be able to interact, if
necessary, with other elements, like
virtual lights, or even cast shadows
on virtual elements. Brainstorm
technology has demonstrated the
possibilities of this feature both in
public demonstrations and in live
shows created by real clients, that
also included other virtual elements
such as AR in front of or behind the
characters.
Originally, the teleportation
has been carried
out on real
environments, in which the character
recorded in chroma was inserted
in a remote location. Current
technology
range of
allows
for a wider
possibilities, allowing
for inserting the character into an
LED video wall, for instance, and
interacting with the presenter, so
both can be seen not only by the
audience at home, but also by the
audience on the set, eventually. And
thanks to Brainstorm's 3D Presenter
technology, the remote character
can interact with the virtual objects
on the set, casting shadows or even
reflections, which allows for a much
more successful integration into the
hyper-realistic
virtual backgrounds
that we can generate with new
rendering techniques.

telepresence
to another level, allowing a person
to virtually move to another place

without needing to be inside a screen
captured by a webcam or using a
conferencing software. By using a
chroma background to capture the
remote
character, which
can be
done even with a mobile phone, we
can bring people from anywhere in
the world to our set, generating a
much more dynamic and engaging
interaction for the audience. Distance
is not an issue anymore.
