Communications World (CCW),
held in conjunction with SATCON, has
over 300 exhibitors. Often called the
NAB of the East, some of the themes
are similar, but it is essential to look
beyond this. Personally I think this
is great show because the smaller
exhibition area means the exhibitors
concentrate their offerings on the
newest and most relevant products and
services. With 7,000 attendees, there
is ample time to interface with the
exhibitors, ask questions, see the latest
technology, get lots of demo time, and
finalise purchasing decisions.
The conference / summit sessions
are combined with keynotes and
workshops. It all starts with a Keynote
Conversation on Wednesday morning:
Why Television Is the New Television?
Best-selling author Michael Wolff will
discuss what's happening in the media
and entertainment industry to support
this conclusion: the Web, social media,
and various mobile platforms are not
the new television when it comes to ad
dollars. Instead, television is the new
television.

Big data may be the rage, but the
tangible question is how should this
data be collected and monetised? The
Wednesday 11:30am keynote address
is all about Broadcast Data & Analytics:
Leveraging Insights and Intimacy
into Results! In this session, the Chief
Research Officer at CBS, David F.
Poltrack, helps you wade through
the choices in new tools designed to

allow broadcasters to extract business
intelligence across siloed business
units, using disparate hardware and
software platforms. The key to their
success is using analytics throughout
their organizations to optimise
revenues and reduce costs.
Audiences are eager to experience
immersive storytelling using Virtual
and Augmented Reality technologies.
Ed Lantz, President and CEO of Vortex
Immersion Media, hosts a panel of
experts to explain the differences
between these technologies, their
potential applications, and the current
opportunities. So if Big Data isn't your
interest, be sure to attend this session
at 11am on Wednesday, Virtual Reality,
Augmented Reality & 360 - The Future
at Hand.
Continuing on the theme of new
technologies, is the Post New York
Alliance's
Wednesday
afternoon
session - What Keeps Top Post Houses'
CTOs and Technologists Up at Night?
This session will help you understand
and cope with new standards, new
Post directions and tomorrow's
technology.
On the exhibition show floor you
will be able to go beyond additional
resolution benefits of UHD/4K and see
how High Dynamic Range (HDR) has a
greater viewer impact. On Wednesday
afternoon at 3:30 Robert Seidel from
CBS will put on his SMPTE President
hat and chair the session, The Road to
High Dynamic Range: Finding Clarity.
This session will be answering the
questions; How will it be delivered?
Are home TV sets ready? What are
the implementation options? And
the biggest question of all - Will HDR
content be compatible with existing
delivery systems? HBO, Sony and Light
Iron will be presenting their opinions.
Thursday at 2:45pm the Ultra HD
Forum will examine the impact of
Ultra HD with HDR and other related

technologies, and how they will be the
biggest change in the user experience
since the transition to color. Keeping
up with technology is tough enough
for the seasoned broadcaster. New
attendees, and those who want to
better understand the media business
and technology, should stop by the
IABM stand and ask about the IABM
training academy. Both online and
classroom courses are available.
With all the hacks in the news
over the past year, security scares
everyone. The timely session called;
It's Not "If" But "When" You'll Get
Hacked, will teach you how to build
and manage an Incident Response
Team. Now is the time to plan, not
after you have suffered a breach.
An event like this can't ignore OTT
since projections have OTT video
services generating $20B+ in revenue
by 2020 with a projected 200M+
global subscribers. Harry Jessell will
moderate a panel of experts debating
the impact on business strategy,
content, and infrastructure. OTT has so
many options and I am sure Harry will
tease out answers from DramaFever,
Pearl TV, Media General, and FTI
Consulting.
