PTZ Cameras are perfect
for the Covid era...
and beyond!
I

f we learnt one thing about
broadcasting since Covid hit, it
was that PTZ Cameras are perfect for
socially distanced, remote productions.
As BirdDog PTZ Cameras are all Full
NDI and delivering broadcast quality
pictures, these PTZ cameras became
the go to solution for many studios;
from small scale production houses
through to 3-letter broadcasters.
BirdDog PTZ cameras all combine NDI
with SDI connections for traditional
baseband workflows. Using NDI
however means that just a single
Ethernet cable is required for Video,
Audio, Tally, and Power (using PoE).
The BirdDog range comes in both
indoor and outdoor models.
The P100, P200 are full HD indoor
production cameras, while the P400
and P4K are 4K UHD cameras with
amazing picture quality. All cameras
use Sony CMOS Exmor R Backlit
Illuminated Broadcast Sensors, as well
as Sony Image Modules. The P-Series
have been designed for indoor use and
are perfect for studio's where there
were restrictions on the numbers of
people. By installing PTZ cameras
inside the Studio and networking to
the master control in another room
it allows for the talent to be socially
distanced from any production team,
thereby creating a safe environment to
produce content, and greatly reducing
the overall numbers of people
required to create productions.

The A200 and A300 are Full NDI,
and SDI, All-Weather A-series cameras
enabled productions from outside
regardless of the weather conditions.
With IP67 ratings, anti-fog features
like internal heaters and nitrogen fill
housings, these cameras were used in
many sporting productions. When used
as NDI cameras the one cable solution
came to the fore again, giving video
and power (using PoE injectors) over a
single Cat6 cable.
BirdDog boasts the only complete
line of Full NDI PTZ cameras which
creates enhanced production benefits
in these times. As the cameras are
networked it allows for software
infrastructure to play a massive part
in the overall ease of use while adding
extremely powerful feature sets.
A great example of how software
can streamline productions is the
free BirdDog Cam Control which
allows users to access all settings
of the BirdDog from any windows
computer on the network. Users
can simply copy the settings from
camera to camera and therefore
can colour match cameras quickly
and easily. Cam Control supports up to
three cameras at a time, and also full
screen output to a secondary monitor
to really dial in the settings.
BirdDog Cloud is a software platform
that takes PTZ Remote Production
to the next level. Cloud allows for
productions to be controlled from
anywhere in the world over the
public internet. Full control of all PTZ
functions including movement, tally,
and audio all can be operated from
anywhere in the world.

BirdDog Cloud creates amazing
workflow opportunities such as
remote studios and all controlled
from a central location. Cameras
in Los Angeles can be totally
controlled from New York for
example.
Recently an update to the P-Series
unlocked an amazing feature set
including a Colour Matrix with 64
levels of control over Red, Green,
Blue, Cyan, Magenta, and Yellow
for both Hue and Saturation. These
professional level features take full
advantage of the high end, Sony
Exmor R sensors and image modules
found across the whole P-Series line,
and all of the advanced colour control
features are controllable by the free
Cam Control software.

BirdDog has been all in on NDI
since the very beginning and were
the first company to develop an NDI
implementation into a silicon chip.
This allows for super low latency,
super high-quality NDI encoding and
NDI decoding. The first products
BirdDog shipped were throw down
converter boxes and this unique NDI
silicon implementation was ported
into the PTZ line of cameras. Owing

to the nature of BirdDog' silicon
implementation of NDI, the cameras
give the lowest latency NDI possible
whilst maintaining the highest quality
pictures.
