UnicamHD by Ikegami
I

kegami Tsushinki, one of the world
leaders in the development and
delivery of pioneering image capture,
transmission, and processing products,
will demonstrate its UnicamHD series
full broadcast quality production
cameras at CABSAT 2015. This consists
of seven models, based on ruggedly
constructed portable heads, which
can be docked with a wide choice of
shared accessories. UnicamHD forms
a complete portfolio ranging in price
and capabilities from professional
to
broadcast
and
multi-cam
cinematographic applications.
Ikegami also produces ultra compact
point-of-view cameras designed to
capture wide angle live video, which
can be intercut with feeds from
UnicamHD during outside broadcast
events or studio productions.
The HiMotionII Ultra Slow-Motion
camera system completes the portfolio
and merges seamlessly into the
product family.
With its huge variety of camera
heads, UnicamHD forms a perfect fit
for each application. From the ultraaffordable HC-HD300 with three 1/3"
CMOS sensors to the medium range
three 2/3" CCD HDK-79GX, and high
end HDK-97A with its full progressive
2/3" CCD imagers, each camera head
can be connected to different adaptors
supporting optical fibre, SMPTE hybrid
electro-optical, triax or wireless
transmission.
Giving a choice of CMOS and
CCD pickup devices avoids making
decisions in a wrong direction.

Ikegami's new
4K super-resolution engine offers
intelligent scaling from high-definition
to ultra-high-definition

Whereas competing product lines stick
to dogmatic approaches concerning
the sensor style, Ikegami adopts both
technologies.
Noise free, but high resolution,
images are guaranteed by using
unique sampling and pre-process
mechanisms, forming a natural and
well balanced picture. The UnicamHD
series employs full 16 bit quantised 38
bit digital processing, which enables
advanced features like real-time
chromatic aberration correction,
variable
colour
temperature,
continuously variable gain, cinematic
and customised gamma curves.
The newly developed Focus Assist
function adds greatly to the usefulness
of LCD and OLED viewfinders. Besides
high resolution, wide contrast, and
low latency, the best imaging device
becomes worthless without precise
focus. Focus Assist delivers what
photographers need for their difficult
task of keeping objects sharp. A
highly flexible software tool, it allows
setting of sizes, durations, colours, and
positions of the focus marker. Autotrigger switches the effect on and off
by controlling focus or zoom; manual
trigger overwrites whenever desired.
Camera selection and multi-camera
operations can be performed from the
newly designed Network Operational
Control Panels, accepting power from
PoE hubs and switches. Base station
hub systems extend the interface to
older non-networked infrastructure.
Remote control via Ethernet not
only saves time and money, it also
permits
remote
production
over
wide area networks.
Master control units,
as well as space-saving
miniature control panels,
are also available.
Base stations in the UnicamHD
series include a cost-efficient 1.5G
fibre or triax CCU, half-width rack
mountable 3G fibre BS-98 and full
19" 3G fibre CCU-980. For multi-role
operations, Ikegami developed the
CCU-980M full 19" rack mountable
camera control unit, supporting

both fibre and triax
transmission.
This
is the perfect fit
for UnicamHD, as
camera
adaptors
can
be
easily
interchanged from
one
transmission
gender to another.
A plugin board
for the BS-98 base
station and CCU-980
camera control unit,
the new Ikegami 4K
super-resolution
engine performs intelligent scaling
from 1920 1080i and 1920 1080p (2K)
high-definition source standards to
3840 2160p (4K) ultra-high-definition.
The engine is compatible with Ikegami
HDK-790GX/79GX,
HDK-970A/97A,
and super 35 mm HDK-97ARRI
cameras, enabling them to be used in a
4K hybrid production environment.
With its super-resolution engine,
the Ikegami scaler can detect edge
artefacts caused by DTL correction
in 2K source signals. Intelligent
processing ensures that these
edges are not exaggerated. Scaling
processing
can
be
performed
automatically, or manually customised.
A re-mastering mode can enhance
sense of resolution of 2K signal using
a super-resolution engine operated
via the base station control menu.
Source signal formats accepted include
1080i50, as well as 1080p23.98,
1080p25, 1080p29.97, and 1080p50.
The 4K super-resolution engine plays
a key role with the HDK-97ARRI and
its super 35 mm high performance
single CMOS sensor. The 3.5K pixels
of ARRI's ALEV imager deliver high
image sharpness, sensitivity, and
latitude for HD, 2K, and 4K workflows.
Combined with Ikegami's real-time
digital processing and transmission,
the HDK-97ARRI forms an excellent
solution for cinematographic multicam applications.
HC-HD300 Makes MEA Debut
Introduced in Q3, 2014, and making
its Middle East and Africa market

The HC-HD300 delivers high quality
pictures in all commonly used HD video
formats, and in SD

debut, the HC-HD300 incorporates
three 1/3" CMOS progressive scan 1920
1080 native sensors, in RGB prism
formation. Aggressively priced, it is
designed for studio or field operation,
and has the same rugged construction
as other member of the UnicamHD
family. The HC-HD300 delivers high
quality pictures in all commonly used
HD video formats, and in SD.
Typical performance characteristics
of the HC-HD300 in 1080/50i output
mode are 1,000 television lines
horizontal resolution, 58 dB signal-tonoise ratio and 2,000 lux sensitivity
(89.9% white reflection), at F11
aperture.
Supporting features include the
focus assist and lens aberration
correction functions, employed in
Ikegami's established UnicamHD range
of cameras.
The HC-HD300 can be operated
under local control, or in conjunction
with a newly developed control
system. This consists of an FA-300
fibre adapter and BSF-300 base
station. Lightweight and compact (1.5
rack units), the BSF-300 base station
is easily integrated into any studio,
mobile truck, or portable flypack.
When using a hybrid fibre camera
cable, the base station provides power
to the fibre adapter and to the camera
itself.
