SPORTSCO May draw Hello and welcome Normally, this is the time of year when we are counting the days and making plans to pack our bags for that much awaited Summer holiday. Unfortunately this year, the clouds gathering are ‘ash clouds’ and many people have decided to make alternative arrangements rather than run the risk of late cancellations and major disappointments. We are all very conscious of the importance of boosting our own economy and we are acutely aware of the losses being incurred by hotels, guest houses, restaurants and the tourist trade in general. There are also some great bargains to be had in all of these places currently in Ireland – any many would say that it is long overdue as a constant complaint during the ‘Celtic Tiger’ years was the exorbitant cost of holidaying at home. However, many people really want to get it away from it all and go to a location where there are no reminders of ‘recession radio’ or wall-to-wall coverage of negative news. This month our travel columnist takes us just across the water – no worries about luggage sizes and weights, sail on one of the state-of-the-art ferries, relax and enjoy the delights of Wales. It’s not too far and it has everything for all the family. Those wishing to travel further into the UK will find plenty to see and do with many beautiful and unspoilt areas from the Lake District, to the Yorkshire Dales, the Cotswolds, Devon and Cornwall. These names conjure up images of chocolate-box villages, towns and cream teas. So don’t be down if you’ve had to change your holiday plans from some exotic location – wind down, chill out and relax – there are many wonderful accessible places you can explore instead. €3,000 €1,500 €1,000 €200 €200 €200 €200 €200 €200 Maurice Foran, Retired Thomas McMahon, Head Office Noel Fallon, Athlone Oliver Brogan, ESBI Brendan Woods, Retired George Watt, Portlaoise Patrick McCabe, Retired Geraldine O’Connor, Limerick William Lawlor, Retired OLA shortlist for award BHí MAITHE agus móruaisle an ghnó, idir fhiontraithe áitiúla agus urlabhraithe de chuid na gcomhlachtaí idirnáisiúnta is mó cáil in Éirinn, i láthair i dTeach an Ardmhéara i mBaile Átha Cliath inniu do na gradaim Barr 50 Gnó le Gaeilge.
