Rear impacts are typical of accidents related to higher
levels of congestion. According to the US DOT, NHTSA
data for CY 2018 shows rear-end collisions with a motor
vehicle in transport accounted for 32.3 percent of
all crashes by first harmful event, manner of collision
and crash severity.
IN CY 2020, THE PANDEMIC CREATED A
NEW REALITY FOR REPAIRERS
In CY 2020, repairers also saw significantly fewer repairs
as vehicle accidents and claims fell. In CY 2020, repairers
also faced the challenge of growing complexity in
both electronic content and material composition, and
the wide variation in both among automakers. Consequently,
repairers face making major investments in
tooling, training, and data to ensure they are equipped
to properly return the vehicle to pre-accident condition.
Consider the new technologies introduced into the
vehicle fleet with advanced driver assistance systems
(ADAS). Features such as automatic emergency braking,
forward collision warning (FCW), adaptive cruise
control, parking assist, highway driving assist, and traffic
jam assist require vehicles be equipped with numerous
cameras, sensors, radar and lidar. With many of these
technologies placed around the perimeter of the vehicle,
the likelihood of damage during a collision is high.
Analysis of repairable vehicle appraisal data shows the
growth in rate of replacement for electronic components
such as sensors, cameras, and radar. In CY 2019,
just over 4 percent of all appraisals included the replacement
of one of these parts where the entry was >$0
(includes both database and manual entries with the
keywords camera, radar, lidar, or sensor that were not
also tagged as calibration or scan operations). By CY
2020, this grew to nearly 6 percent.
All these components must be aligned properly to
work as designed, and even a minor fender bender
can result in the need to reposition, reprogram and/
or recalibrate these systems. A scan tool is used to get
a full readout of the electronics and whether they are
operating properly. Analysis of repairable vehicle appraisal
data uploaded in CY 2020 showed 5 percent of
all vehicles included a calibration entry in the appraisal
(any estimate line containing the " calibrate " text
string) (see Figure 5), while 46 percent of all Q4 2020
appraisals (see Figure 6) included a scan entry. With
all these changes occurring to the vehicle itself, it is not
surprising to see the industry experiencing some of the
largest increases in vehicle repair costs in many years.
RISING VEHICLE REPAIR COSTS
In CY 2020, the average repairable vehicle appraisal
amount rose by 5.5 percent to $3,421 (Figure 7).
Analysis of repairable appraisal data from CY 2011 to
CY 2020 also shows the overall growth in the average
number of parts replaced per claim and the average
number of labor hours per claim. Between CY
2011 and CY 2020, the percent of repairable appraisals
with >0 and <=10 labor hours (including body, frame,
mechanical and paint labor categories) fell by -5.3
percent, while those with 30 or more labor hours per
claim increased nearly 3 percentage points (Figure 8).
Additional labor time is closely tied to more parts on
the vehicle needing repair or replacement, as Figure
9 illustrates. Nearly three or more additional parts on
