T
he historical principle of supply and demand
has made the used car market red hot right
now. Since March 2020, according to the U.S.
Bureau of Labor Statistics' Consumer Price Index, used
car prices have skyrocketed more than 30 percent.
With customers waiting at the door for these fresh
trades, and dealers fearful that the record high market
will abruptly shift, dealers are highly motivated to get
their inventory reconditioned quickly. However, dealers
are reporting they have been forced to take older
vehicles which is putting a strain on reconditioning
turn times due to higher cost repairs and challenges
obtaining parts.
When they do get near-mint automobiles in trade as
part of a deal, dealers may want to qualify them as
a Certified Pre-Owned. Fear that the inspection and
reconditioning processes can't be done quickly and efficiently
enough to warrant the extra work and resulting
delays make those required steps less attractive.
Regardless of the quality of vehicle, the recon process

is front and center when it comes to speeding up turn
time and increasing used vehicle volume.

MANAGEMENT SOFTWARE
In light of the current situation, several experts shared
five things to look for in reconditioning management
software that will help dealerships maximize profit on
all of their pre-owned business.
#1 GET AUTOMATED
First and foremost, dealers need to be using truly automated
software to manage their inspection and reconditioning
processes. Be wary. Some products claim
to be automated, but still require a user to manage
them in a hands-on way throughout the entire reconditioning
process. According to Waylon Johnson, the
General Manager of Mercedes-Benz of Myrtle Beach,
what you want is something you can set and walk away
