Are You Growing Your Bench for Tomorrow or Have You
Been Affected by the Great Resignation?
T
he American workforce has struggled to keep
their businesses staffed and the automotive industry
has not been immune. Prior to COVID, the
most common topic of conversation with everyone in
the fixed ops world was, " How to get technicians. " Covid
certainly intensified the need for personnel. But, not just
the need to acquire technicians. It also put a spotlight
on retention and the loyalty aspect of employees in all
areas of the dealership. The current generation entering
the workforce is not interested in just pay or title. The
current generation of employees want a career path. As
current and potential employers, it is time to set ourselves
apart from the rest. We must attract the people
who want to better themselves. We
must invest time in these future and
current employees so we will retain
them at our stores to take care of our
valuable customers.
" WHERE DO I START? "
grow that career. First, consider your advertising. Most
ads say the same 5 things: Great pay! Paid vacation!
Great work environment! 401k! Health insurance! Congratulations.
Everyone offers 401K. Everyone has benefits.
The local fast-food restaurant has a more appealing
job ad.
The current generation
of employees want a
career path
Let's start with attacking the way you go about finding
these potential new hires who are seeking a place to

Think of the employment ad as the start of the interview.
How would you sell your company to a possible new
hire? What really stands out at your store? Why should
they choose you? Think about some of the employment
ads that stand out and create something engaging. How
about, " Are you looking for an opportunity for personal
and professional growth? " Or, " Is
work/life balance important to you? "
Then add a few details about the job
that you are seeking to fill. Use phrases
that set you apart from all the other
ads out there. You might consider:
" atmosphere like no other " , " a personalized
career path " , " flexible work
schedules " , " come join our family " , or " we truly under
