Increased Automation
First, increased automation pays an extra dividend by
opening more avenues to non-traditional workers, especially
inexperienced workers. In an industry that is
90 percent male, women are an incredibly underutilized
resource. With decreasing need for physical
strength due to safer and easy-to-use machines, the
demographic pool can widen significantly.
Great Techs Deserve Great Tools
Second, great techs recognize, and deserve, great
tools. Solid equipment, backed with service and training,
does double duty by attracting quality employees,
and then retaining them. This is a point worth
emphasizing. Most techs take immense pride in their
work and strive to maintain a high level of production.
Average equipment turns great techs into average
techs. Great equipment allows good techs to be
great techs. They will seize the opportunity and go as
far and as fast as they can.
6 - MOBILE SERVICE
Lastly, one might assume that mobile service is another
example of the economy adapting to the pandemic,
but this good idea predates COVID. Now it's
becoming a possibility definitely worth examining.
With vans that can be configured to handle a wide variety
of needs and functions, you will be able to meet
your customers on their own ground-literally-and
still perform many of the same services you would in
the shop. For maximum efficiency, roll equipment and
supplies in and out of your vans and schedule services
for different days: Mondays, brakes. Tuesdays

and Wednesdays, tire and wheel service. Thursdays,
filters, airbags, lights, blades. Fridays, assorted accessories,
recall work, special-order parts.
The benefits are attractive and numerous. Maintain
a connection with your customers. Level the competitive
field. Expand your geographic reach. Satisfy
OEMs by expanding your service and tire offerings.
Diagnose additional repairs onsite and drive business
back to the dealership.
Change can be unsettling, but it usually brings opportunity.
Dealerships will need to be creative as they
face new challenges. View your newfound space not
as empty asphalt, but as a blank canvas ready for
your new direction.
