The most common excuse I hear for not getting serious
about tires is, " we don't make any money. " It is
true that tires are a lower-margin sale. But with the
right cost structure, you can make money. The aftermarket
tire shops sure do. Steal a page from their
playbook. Tires are the key to retention. All you need
to do is sell customers something they need, and the
retention will take care of itself.
Alignments are also possibly one of the highest-margin
things you do, and you have invested heavily in
a specialized (i.e., expensive) piece of equipment to
do them. Here is another challenge for you. Walk into
your shop. If the alignment rack is empty, tell yourself
that should NEVER be the case. It has been commonly
suggested that even at a modest closing rate, the
opportunity far exceeds the capacity most dealers
have. I recently wrote a whitepaper that outlines a
new way to measure the success of your alignment
rack. Tracking or managing its " turns, " just like you do
with vehicle inventory, will give you a unique perspective
on how well (or not well) this piece of equipment
is contributing to your bottom line. For most dealers,
