Your boss pauses a moment, looking
at you, then looks at his boss, and
then the new guy, and tells you how
much he appreciates all your hard
work. He goes on to say that he understands
how busy you have been,
because we all know how hard it is
to pack 2 hours of work into a 6 hour
day. Now, when you're starting to digest
this last comment, he ends the
remark with, " Let me introduce you
to the new guy " .
He is a
more energetic,
more motivated,
more loyal,
more inspired,
more dedicated
version of you!
You shouldn't be very surprised by
this, if you're being honest with yourself. You come in
when you want to come in, leave when you want to
leave, get along with most everyone, don't hold other
employees accountable, and have a good relationship
with most of the people in the other departments. In
fact, you've justified yourself into a false sense of security,
as if you were a true value
to the organization. You are doing
things, shuffling reports, apologizing
to mad customers, going home
drained. You knew somewhere in the
dim recesses of your mind that you
were missing something, but what?
Oh yeah, that's what it is: drive; the
drive to take your department to the
next level, the drive to try something
new, the drive to increase market
share, the drive to increase profitability
more than the status quo, the
drive to increase your employees
productivity and their paychecks more than enough
to keep up with skyrocketing inflation, and the drive to
grow your business.
You really didn't have any new ideas on how to do this,
nothing that was a quick fix anyway; and, quite frankly,
