Training maximally, rather than
submaximally, is what flips the growth
switch. However, that doesn't translate into
having to flip that super energy switch
every single workout. You can introduce
variety into your workout rotation as well
as into individual workouts with alternate
intensity.
There can be some real benefits from a
lower-key session on occasion. Some oldtimers
will deliberately allow for a day that
isn't quite as hardcore. They might have
one to two hard workouts a week and a
third session that's not quite as
challenging. They'll go heavy a couple of
times and then use a regimen with lighter
weights but a slightly higher repetition
scheme. This proves to be a successful
training rotation.
It's best not to " hit the wall " on every
workout. And a lighter routine can keep
your muscles supplied with blood and not
driven to breaking down.
The key to making some gains from a
lower-key workout is to make sure the
other training sessions are very hardcore.
However, to get that payoff the majority of
workouts must be in the top zone,
breaking barriers and consistently
bumping up against your all-out best.
If you do this regularly, then taking an
occasional training day to work at a
different level can be beneficial.

One of the benefits of employing a
workout that doesn't push you over the
edge is that recovery will be quicker, and
you'll have more to give in future
workouts.
There are a few ways to turn down the
overall intensity load. One is to make the
routine shorter. If you normally perform
four sets of a particular exercise, go for
two instead. Doing this for all of the
exercises will yield a shorter session that
won't tax your body as much.
You can also go with lighter weights
but higher repetition counts. Or you can
simply try adding in some different
exercises and different styles. For instance,
employ some kettlebell movements.
