I'd like to do an interior makeover this
year but given my track record in previous
attempts, I don't trust my judgment in making
selections. All too often my choices were
influenced on the latest trends and they
didn't stand up to time. What advice do you
have to ensure that my choices now won't be
outdated in just a few years? And how can
today's choices help ease the transition into
future trends without having to do another
major (and expensive) makeover?
Today, with all of social media marketing the current
trends, it can easily make you feel that you are out of style
with your hairstyle/color, clothing, lifestyle and home.
As we know, trends are constantly changing and trying
to keep up by purchasing all the latest and greatest will
certainly do a number on your bank account.
As an interior designer, I follow the current trends but I
never push them on my clients as each person has their
own style, needs and wants. Magazines and Pinterest
are a great source for checking out options. Many of
my clients will show me photos of their favorites which
is very helpful to me in coordinating the best designs,
colors and patterns for their home. Some love lots of color
and patterns while others enjoy clean lines. One thing

to remember when looking at marketing photos-they
use enhanced lighting and are perfected by photo edits.
It's unrealistic to expect your home makeover to look as
perfect.
When you start a new interior makeover, think about the
use of the room. Is it multiple use? How is the lighting?
Do you get the morning sun or late afternoon sun? Do
the windows face north or south? Adding recessed lights
with a dimmer is a great option to brighten a room on
gloomy days and evenings. This is also a flexible option
for the room's use for watching TV, reading, working on a
project, etc.
Does the room get heavy activity such as those associated
with children and pets? I recommend quality hardsurface
flooring such as ceramic tile, vinyl planks or vinyl
tiles for these high-use areas. Keep your selections more
natural and timeless using wood and stone patterns.
Avoid selecting an unusual color or pattern that will be
a challenge to coordinate in the future. Add color and a
pattern with a fun, trendy area rug that can be changed
without major expense of changing out the flooring.
Walls can be a great way to add color and pattern to your
home. First, select a neutral main paint color for most of
the house so there is a visual flow. By selecting a neutral
main color, it will be easy to coordinate a trendy color or
pattern on an accent wall or even an entire bathroom.
