When you tire of that particular look or color, repainting
such small areas are a fun and easy way to change things
up. In bathrooms, you can also have fun with a new colorful
shower curtain and coordinated bath towels.
Window treatments can also add color and/or texture. If
you have nice decorative rods, you can easily change the
drapery panels. Some folks have fun changing them with
the seasons-heavy textured, deep-colored fabrics for
the fall and winter that can be changed to lighter sheer,
weave fabrics for the spring and summer.
Generally, I recommend neutral fabrics or leather for
larger furniture so you can coordinate some color and
pattern with throw pillows, chairs and an area rug. Neutral
fabrics may sound boring but there are many beautiful
textures and understated small patterns from which to
choose. When the trends start to change or you are tired
of your current look, you'll have fun changing to a new,
relatively low-cost look with new throw pillows, area rug,
wall paint color and décor.
Don't forget the home décor after you install new floors,
purchase new furniture or paint the walls. Home décor
is like the jewelry, scarf, purse and shoes of your outfit.
You can dress it up or dress it down. You can change the
look of your room to be more traditional, modern, casual,
formal, or a theme with your selection of artwork, lamps,
accessories, floral designs, accent furniture and more!
Home décor is easily changed when trends change. You
can also change the look of your room with the " accessory
shuffle " and then, add a few new pieces. It is a great way
to get a new look without spending a ton of money!
Some rooms and areas of the home can be a real
challenge. Asking a friend for advice can be positive or
negative depending on their personal style--especially if
different from yours. You also run the risk of offending
your friend if you don't take their advice. Another option
is having a design consultation with an interior designer.
Many offer the option of an hour or two to help you with
tips and ideas. Just remember that trends come and go.
Always go with your style which probably will out last the
current trend, as well as those that follow.
