In this issue...
For many home shoppers, finding the right
property in the right neighborhood is often
more important than finding the right home.
After all, and as we've seen since the start
of R&A Magazine in 2007, unlike a property
or neighborhood, homeowners can dramatically
transform their home. With some vision,
creativity and the talents of skilled craftsmen
we've seen some Plain Jane's morph into
dream homes time and time again. This edition's
cover story project is another beautiful
example.
Moving back to the area after years of living
out of state, these homeowners found a suitable
home on a sizeable lot in an established
older neighborhood in a very convenient location.
While the home had character and some
features that they found attractive such as
hardwood floors and unpainted interior trim,
it was small and needed significant electrical,
plumbing, heating and air upgrades. As you'll
learn starting on page 24, the homeowners
had the vision from early on and when the
time was right, they selected the Lancasterbased,
award-winning builder, TK Building &
Design to make it a reality-and a beautiful
one at that.
The Feature article in this edition is a gardenpiece
showcasing two separate projects-
one focused on integrating a home with its
surroundings and the other on a Japaneseinspired
courtyard. Both projects are vividly
described and photographed.
Our Ask the Experts panel once again provides
some very helpful advice. Topics this time
include: an update on Covid's impact on the
fireplace industry in terms of both supply and
new product development; practical suggestions
on interior makeovers that will stand
up to time; and a detailed timeline for those
contemplating a kitchen renovation.
Lastly, in The Gallery, we have a home makeover
and addition project that showcases an
assortment of building products and materials
(lumber, custom millwork, trim, shiplap, cabinetry,
windows, interior doors, and decking)
all supplied by GR Mitchell.
In closing, I'd like to call your attention to this
year's Labor Day Auction benefitting Hospice
& Community Care which will be held at the
Solanco Fairgrounds on September 4th & 6th.
(Yes, it's an in-person event again!) According
to their promotion (see page 47), the event
will include some great treasures for the
home as well as some tasty prizes
for your belly. Best yet, it's all in
support of a great
cause.
