Web exclusive ams has revealed that it is supplying an ultralow noise mixed-signal chip to Siemens, enabling significant performance gains in an X-ray computed-tomography scanner. In a CT scanner, X-rays are converted to light by a scintillator, and that light is detected, typically by a photo-diode array. By providing a very low noise signal path, and therefore higher sensitivity, the ams analogue front-end permits a higher-resolution scanner to operate with much-reduced patient X-ray dose. ➔ www.edn-europe.com/article.asp?articleid=5915 Vishay Technology has announced a series of new power FETs across its voltage ranges. A new AEC-Q101-qualified, 40-V n-channel TrenchFET power MOSFET for heavy duty automotive applications, the SQM200N041m1L is Vishay’s first power MOSFET in the 7-pin D2PAK package. The E Series of 600-V power MOSFETs gains 17 new devices in eight packages that extend the on-resistance range of the family from 39 mΩ to 600 mΩ at 10V, and broaden its maximum current ratings from 7A to 73A. ➔ www.edn-europe.com/article.asp?articleid=5916 Advanced Power Electronics has announced the APU3037-3 controller IC, designed to be a low cost synchronous buck regulator for on-board dc to dc converter applications. It operates with single 5 or 15V supply in fixed frequency voltage mode and has a 500mA peak output drive capability. From the same source there is also an efficient linear voltage regulator with better than 2% initial voltage accuracy. The APU1205-3 family features a very low drop-out voltage and very low ground current. ➔ www.edn-europe.com/article.asp?articleid=5917 Vicor has announced the VI BRICK AC Front End module for high, density, high efficiency AC to DC power conversion, a complete AC–DC converter which operates over 85-264V to deliver a fully isolated and PFC regulated 48V output. In a low profile package measuring 3.75 x1.91 in. (95.3mm x 48.6mm) and 0.38 in. (9.55 mm) in height, the AC Front End module provides a power conversion density of 121 W/in3 (7.5W/ cm3) or 54 W/in3 for a complete supply. ➔ www.edn-europe.com/article.asp?articleid=5918 In next month’s EDN Europe In its February 2013 issue, EDN Europe will look at the topic of Embedded systems design, and will highlight some significant emerging technologies. In March 2013, the focus topics will include System ICs, and Medical system design. Further ahead, planned topics include Wireless and Power systems.
