It's Tough to be a Teen...
It's not always easy being a teenager. Today's teens are facing peer pressure, social
media, bullying, academic responsibilities, family duties, hormones overtaking...the list
goes on and on.
As adults, it can be easy to forget the challenges that teenagers face. Just because most
teens are not paying bills, doesn't mean they are not experiencing stress.
The great news is teen anxiety and depression are highly treatable once identified.
That is where TeenHope comes in.
TeenHope is a vital mental health teen-screening program that is primarily donorfunded.
TeenHope
screens for anxiety, depression and suicide risk of students in local middle
and high schools. The program's goal is to identify at-risk students who are flying below
the radar before a crisis situation occurs. The program encompasses three main focus
areas which include prevention, early identification, and access to treatment; with it all
starting with the actual screening.
TeenHope has provided screenings in 12 local school districts and screened a total of
2,543 students in the 2022-2023 school year so far. From these screenings, TeenHope
has identified 603 (23.7%) students at-risk for depression or anxiety. Of the 603 at-risk
students, 231 (38.3%) had thoughts of self-harm or suicidal thoughts within the past
two weeks.
Just recently, we received a generous $30,000 grant from the High Foundation, to
provide screenings in 6 local school districts. And TeenHope has expanded beyond the
physical brick walls of our local schools, and started reaching additional students for
screenings at The Mix at Arbor Place. Because of our donors and community partners,
TeenHope is making a difference!
