Flames Made Easy with Knifeless Tape
In the series of photographs featured here, PDAA Master Certified Installer Jim Miller of Miller Decals
(Woodstock, Georgia) demonstrates how to make flames (or other shapes) using Knifeless Tape, a new tool for
graphics installation professionals. Knifeless Tape removes the possibility of cutting the vehicle’s painted surface
because the vinyl is cut from the inside out. Here’s how it works: A narrow tape is applied along the cut line,
and then the vinyl is applied over the top of the tape. Inside the tape is a thin, strong filament that, when pulled

upwards, cuts through the vinyl. The remaining tape is then removed via the cut line.
Jim Miller uses the Knifeless Tape to essentially “draw” the flame pattern onto the surface of the vehicle, starting at one end, and
moving across the hood in one continuous length of tape.
Where the flames will come to a sharp point, Jim creates a “loop” with the tape, as Knifeless Tape is not intended for sharp corners.
Vinyl — in this case a red metal-flake paint-wrapping film — is applied over the top of the vehicle hood.
