U.S. Companies Report Scarcity of Qualified Candidates
In recent years, many companies and industries have
reported a scarcity of qualified candidates, but now the
Hay Group, a division of Korn Ferry, has the data to back
this up. Their recent analysis shows a significant scarcity
of qualified job candidates among U.S. companies, not
to mention that a reported 41 percent of analyzed
organizations struggle to find the right talent.
Information technology is the industry experiencing the
greatest talent shortage (42 percent job scarcity), followed
by engineering (34 percent) and finance and accounting
(16 percent). The study also found that administration and
support (3 percent), legal (3 percent) and health, safety
and environment (1 percent) are the easiest positions to
fill.
Other findings include:
* The voluntary turnover rate for employees in 2016 was
11.9 percent-consistent with previous years.
* The fields with the highest rates of voluntary turnover,
in order, are production, sales, IT and engineering.
Employee Engagement is on the Decline
The last few years have showed a steady incline in
employee engagement, but a new report from Aon
Hewitt finds that it has dropped-the first time since
2012. Ken Oehler, global culture and engagement practice
leader at Aon Hewitt, attributes this to advances in
technology that poses a threat to job security.
The organizations has been tracking employee
engagement since 2011 and reports the percent of
engagement for the following years:
2011: 59 percent
2012: 58 percent
2013: 60 percent
2014: 62 percent
2015: 65 percent
2016: 63 percent
According to Aon Hewitt, improving engagement can pay
dividends. Its research shows that a five-point increase in
employee engagement is linked to three-point increase in

revenue growth in the subsequent year. Oehler says that
when engagement decreases, turnover and absenteeism
can increase.
Aon Hewitt's analysis found regional variations in
engagement were driven by regional and country-specific
economic, political, and cultural differences. According
to Aon Hewitt, engagement for employees in Asia Pacific
saw the biggest decline, dropping from 65 percent in 2015
to 62 percent in 2016. Recognition programs were ranked
as the top opportunity to improve the engagement of
employees in Asia.
Latin America saw the largest increase in engagement,
growing from 72 percent in 2015 to 75 percent in 2016.
Employees Want Interactive Problem-Solving
A survey conducted by Oblong Industries, creators of
interactive, spatial solutions for collaborative work,
revealed that nearly 89 percent of respondents " agree "
or " strongly agree " that approaching information more
interactively and immersively facilitates problem solving.
This " immersive collaboration " is defined by visual, multidimensional
presentation tools that allow the audience to
interact with the information presented.
The data was sourced through one-on-one interviews and
found that only 52 percent of survey respondents think
that their office's system of collaboration was immersive.
Despite limited experience with interactive resources,
respondents still estimated that immersive collaboration
could drive a 65 percent improvement in productivity
during meetings. All of this suggests that employees-and
particularly millennials-are looking for cutting-edge
