is essential. Yet while 86 percent of
leaders believe leadership succession
planning is an " urgent " or " important "
priority, Deloitte reports that only 14
percent believe they do it well.
The key to effective succession
planning? Creating an up-to-date
talent database and monitoring
current and future talent needs. HR
professionals can get a better idea
of the talent they already have by
collecting data from multiple systems
across the organization, being sure to
include metrics like education level,
competencies, experiences, career
interests, and mobility limitations.
HR should also identify the
competencies, skills, and experience
required for critical positions in the
organization. By comparing anticipated
talent requirements with the skills
already represented in the talent
database, they can identify highpotentials
as well as any current or
future skills gaps.
Being Agile
One of today's biggest business trends
is adopting the principles of " agile " -a
project management philosophy
that emphasizes speed, teamwork,
flexibility, and outcomes over processes
and planning. Essentially, the agile
framework gives more power and
autonomy to small teams working
on a project, removing the manager
oversight and encouraging decisionmaking
at the team level rather than
from a top-down structure.
Working together using an approach
called " scrum, " teams can closely
collaborate with each other and with

their clients, seeking feedback in all
stages of the process and organically
adapting the design. Resources are
allocated as needed rather than being
held to a strict, plan-based budget,
giving employees the freedom to work in
productive " sprints. " The agile approach
relies on constant innovation, feedback,
and testing, empowering employees to
experiment and harness their creativity
to deliver a quality product.
While agile is being used by 90 percent
of IT departments, according to the
11th Annual State of Agile Report,
it is still a relatively new concept
across other parts of the business.
However, Deloitte reports that 79
percent of global executives rate agile
performance management as a high
organizational priority. Organizations
that wish to implement agile should
consider these best practices:
* Start with a client goal.
* Set an overall budget, but do not
place restrictions on interim targets.
* Seek out customer feedback
throughout the design process via quick
prototypes.
* Give teams the freedom to redesign.
* Allocate extra resources for any
necessary sprints.
Pay Equity
There has been much discussion and
research about the gender pay gap
in recent months. According to the
National Partnership for Women &
Families, the median annual salary for a
woman in a year-round, full-time job is
$41,977 compared to $52,146 for men.
This means that women in the United
States are paid on average 80 cents for
every dollar paid to men, amounting to
an annual gender wage gap of $10,169.
And research suggests that unless
