Peer Power
There is so much value that can be gained by learning
from your peers. In fact, according to a Degreed study,
when employees need to learn a new skill, 55 percent
say they first turn to their peers for guidance. So for
our second annual CHRO Today special supplement, I
asked two leading CHROs to provide some guidance
and strategies to their peers as they face this especially
challenging talent market.
" With unemployment so low, we are trying to find
hidden talent for our particular needs, " explains Roger
Casalengo, senior vice president of HR for Cobham
Advanced Electronic Solutions. " We are creating
internal opportunities with upskilling and cross-training
in nontraditional types of roles and creating a level
of awareness and sense of urgency around employee
engagement. "
Casalengo says the services and technology organization
is also leveraging its programs to drive brand awareness.
" Other traditional paths, such as apprenticeships
sponsored by the states we operate in, have created
positive employee branding opportunities and increased
our applicant flow in several locations, " he says.
Sean Kimble, vice president of HR for USA Compression
Partners LLC, is also looking to unique programs to grow
a pipeline of skilled technicians. " We have been using
nontraditional methods of staffing, such as rotators from
remote cities that are transported to the workplace using
a 14-on and 14-off schedule, " he explains.
Local partnerships are also increasing numbers. " We
have also been building our own talent pool of skilled
technicians through improved partnerships with technical
schools and universities, " Kimble says. Plus, more robust
management skills development and training is adding to
the overall impact of USA Compression's talent pool.
