How do HR practitioners feel about
compensation for their profession? In
September 2019, HRO Today surveyed
60 senior HR executives. They were
asked if they felt the CHRO in their
organization is compensated on par
with other C-level executives. It should
be noted that in some cases, the CHRO
was the person taking the survey.
More than two-thirds (68.2 percent)
agreed, a somewhat tepid response.

That question was followed up by
two more questions that addressed
what CHROs thought would be the
ideal way to base CHRO compensation
at their company. While slightly over
half of survey respondents think
that compensation should reflect
the size of the organization, the
analysis clearly showed that this isn't
currently the case. In fact, the analysis
showed no correlation at all between
compensation and size of company.
Ultimately, HR leaders don't all
necessarily agree that compensation
for their senior-most executive should
So while HR doesn't think the
highest level representative they
have in the company is necessarily
compensated similarly to the rest
of the C-suite, they're even more
ambiguous about how the structure
of compensation should be derived to
make compensation more fair. This view
is maintained despite the knowledge
that company performance and size
are most often a key consideration for
C-suite compensation packages.
