The Power
of Purpose
It is well known that today's employees seek out job
opportunities that give them a sense of purpose-but a
new Korn Ferry survey of nearly 400 HR executives shows
that delivering purpose-driven leadership has an impact on
more than just talent acquisition. According to the survey
results, companies with a clear mission and set of values see
a signifi cant fi nancial advantage over their competitors.
Other main fi ndings include:
* Ninety-six percent of respondents agree that there is a
long-term fi nancial benefi t to committing to a purposedriven
culture.
* Purpose greatly impacts employee engagement, with
89 percent of respondents reporting that it has a positive
effect on productivity.
* Fifty-nine percent of employees agree that their principal
personal driver at work is the belief that their work has
meaning, compared to 11 percent that cite pay as their key
motivator.
* Job seekers consider mission and values the key
differentiator between organizations (33 percent), followed
by company culture (30 percent), career progression (14
percent), and pay and benefi ts (12 percent).

As presidential impeachment hearings take center stage
in the news, employers have to consider how heated
political conversations will affect workforce morale and
performance.
A survey of 1,000 U.S. employees by Refl ektive suggests
that the very topic of politics can stir up confl ict; in fact,

26 percent of Americans say they can't discuss the subject
without the conversation getting tense. Other contentious
topics include religion, abortion, and racism. Because
men are more likely than women to engage in political
conversations at work (67 percent versus 46 percent), they
are disproportionately affected by the impact of these
divisive conversations.
Political tension between co-workers can negatively affect
attendance and performance:
* Fifty-six percent of men and 43 percent of women say the
current political climate affects them at work.
* Thirty percent of men and 15 percent of women say
impeachment hearings could affect their work performance.
* Men are more likely than women (56 percent versus 40
percent) to worry that disagreeing with the political views of
their boss or co-workers could impact performance reviews.
The survey results also highlight another issue for
employers: American workers lack the confl ict resolution
skills (27 percent) and tools (38 percent) to navigate heated
conversations on emotionally charged topics. However,
they indicate that one-on-one conversations with their
boss (30 percent) or HR person (23 percent) may be helpful,
complemented by a defi ned process to handle confl ict (23
percent).
