Other technologies including machine learning,
chatbots, and automation are catching on across a
variety of industries. For example, Alexander Mann
Solutions' Head of Emerging Talent for Asia Pacifi c Amie
Wiseman says that her fi eld of graduate recruitment,
which is a high-volume process that gets squeezed into
short time periods, is ripe for technological change.
Wiseman points to Alexander Mann's development of a
series of bots to help manage the volume of candidates
and the resulting paperwork trail. " We support an
average of about 100,000 permanent hires on an annual
basis, which then equates to about 250,000 interviews,
thousands of contracts that are produced, and millions
of applications that we screen, " she explains. " For us, it
was perfect to look at automation. "
She says the " Doris " bot, which orchestrates document
downloads, came fi rst, followed by an interview
scheduling bot " Isaac " and then " Hannah, " a chatbot
that can handle repetitive but predictable questions
and hand off to an employee when the questions
become too complex.
Wiseman calls this the " swivel-chair approach " to
automation, which allows the recruiter to move from
one application to the next whilst still controlling the
process.
This use of chatbots has a track record of success.
As a case study, Wiseman points to a U.K. banking
organisation that conducts around 35,000 interviews
annually. When it implemented the " Isaac " bot, which
asks the hiring manager for available interview slots
and then matches those with candidates, the company's
time to schedule interviews dropped by 17 per cent and
is on track to further decline by about 20 to 30 per cent,
she says.
Grace Chen, head of HR at Bayer Healthcare, has also
seen fi rst-hand the time savings gained from leveraging
automation. She says that turnover is at least 20
per cent in China and if a company has a workforce
of 10,000, the work-hours investment of HR, even
assuming just three minutes spent per CV, can be huge.

increasingly being integrated into the workplace.

for some of the technologies available, many HR
professionals express reservations about how much
control of the process should be left on autopilot.
