Report: Relocating to China
Although China is one of the top destinations worldwide
where companies are transferring employees, it is also
one of the most challenging both for companies and
transferees, according to a report by Cartus, a provider of
global relocation services.
The report Best Practices for Effective Relocation to China
points out that China is ranked as second worldwide in
terms of importance for companies' future business goals.
But the list of challenges that employees must overcome
for success runs long and deep. According to Cartus, the top
five challenges in Greater China are:
1. Intercultural issues
2. Finding suitable local candidates
3. Controlling relocation/assignment costs
4. Housing
5. Language issues
CareerBuilder Survey: Recruiting with Social Media
Avoiding a professional online presence may be hurting
chances of finding a new job. More than one third of
employers (35 percent) say they are less likely to interview
job candidates if they are unable to find information about
that person online, according to CareerBuilder's annual
social media recruitment survey.
Social media and recruitment is certainly on the rise, as
52 percent of employers use social networking sites to
research job candidates, up significantly from 43 percent
last year and 39 percent in 2013. This does not necessarily
mean recruiters are looking to find a negative history on
social media-60 percent are actually looking for a history
relative to the job.
Social media use in recruitment varies by industry, as hiring
managers in information technology and financial services
(76 percent and 64 percent, respectively) are the most
likely to use social networks to screen candidates; retail (46
percent) had the lowest share.
Depending on what hiring managers find, candidates'
online information can help or hurt their odds of getting
a job. Forty-eight percent of hiring managers who
screen candidates via social networks said they've found
information that caused them not to hire a candidate.
Top issues for employers included from provocative or
inappropriate photographs (46 percent) and information
about candidate drinking or using drugs (40 percent).
Thirty-two percent of recruiters found positive information

causing them to hire a candidate, including their
background information supported their job qualifications
(42 percent) and their personality came across as a good fit
with the company culture (38 percent).
Challenges Deterring Global Expansion
According to the ADP Midsized Business Owners Study, while
one in 10 midsized business owners in the United States say
they plan to expand globally in the next two years, more than
75 percent feel they don't have the tools they need to manage
a global workforce. This lack of confidence in their readiness
to expand includes the fact that many view compliance issues
across multiple countries and managing talent across borders
as major hurdles to their successful expansion.
Even if midsized businesses are not contemplating
expansion into other countries, they still are feeling
the impacts of globalization at home. According to the
same study, two in five midsized business owners say
globalization has affected how they conduct their day-today
business, especially when it comes to technology.
This lack of preparedness translates to challenges at
home as well. Only one in 10 midsized business owners
are completely confident they have the tools needed to
effectively manage their talent. Two of five respondents
are concerned about the overall talent pool. Despite talent
concerns, the study found nearly two out of five businesses
increased their headcount in the past year and more than
one-third anticipate increasing it again in the coming year,
hiring an average of 14 employees.
On the Move
Viquar Khan
Futurestep, a Korn Ferry company, has named Viquar (Vic)
Khan as managing director of global operations to address
the growing demand for its talent acquisition solutions,
as well as enhance services to existing clients. Khan will
further develop the organization's global capability to
support clients across its recruitment centers.
Penny Queller
Global provider of talent acquisition and management
solutions Alexander Mann Solutions announced that Penny
Queller has joined the company as SVP solution sales,
Americas. Queller joins from The Bartech Group, where she
was SVP of global solutions and services.
